Anyone recommend some relatively cheap base layers please

After a short sleeve and a long sleeve

Would ideally like merino wool but guessing not going to get that very cheap

Are the standard Planet X ones any good can get a short and long sleeve one for 24 quid for both?

These are to be worn under jackets and never see the light of day so I’m not bothered by what they look like

Never had an issue with Decathlon base layers, cheap enough to bin when they start to stink too.

Maybe try Mountain Warehouse or see if Prendas have any on offer at the moment.

I think the Planet X 365 ones take some beating for the money.

The PX Pro 365x long and short sleeve base layers are excellent - I have a few of both. Very comfy on the bike.

Useless for use for walking etc... though as they ride up so i'd highly recommend you wear them under bib straps. Never had a problem with them on the bike.

Got my first Planet X 36t long sleeved base layer recently and I think I’ll probably buy a few more. They aren’t as thin as Nike or under armour summer base layers but aren’t quite as thick as they ehe Nike pro or under armour cold gear ones. So they strike a nice balance particularly for the autumn.

They are compression fit rather than loose fit if that makes a difference to you.

I’ve found Nike and under armour tend to hold the sweat smell under the arm pits if not washed almost straight after you take them off. Just bought some sports wash detergent to try from CRC - and will also see how the Planet X one goes.

My sports direct thermal base layers have lasted many years of running and cycling with crashing, think they were two for £7 too!

interesting so the planet x ones seem ok for the money then

i kinda begrudge paying a fortune for them, as long as they keep me warm under my jacket/softshell thats all interested in and dont get too soaking wet/smelly!

i might take a punt on the 2 from planet x then cheers!

All my base layers are from Decathlon. They are spot on and pretty cheap as base layers go.

I wear long sleeve under a Polaris gilet at this time of year. Aldi had merino in last week, seems decent. I've got nike and endura besides, both years old and going strong, endura rides up the least. If it's really cold I've got a Canterbury rugby winter job which is ideal.

Stop spending money on oil slick components and put it towards some decent kit 🙂

Decathlon football baselayers are better and cheaper than their cycling ones IMO. They also have the advantage of being quite long. Cheap too.

Bought a long sleeve merino on in Aldi last week and seems Ok (based on one wear so far). Thin merino long sleeve t shirt in boring grey, reasonably long in the body to reduce the chance of a cold waist gap.
I have a short sleeve merino synthetic mix one from a couple of years back that has been great. If you’re lucky they may still have them in as they came in about 10 days ago.

ha! nooooooo - for clothing that just gets abused all winter especially underneath, really not arsed in spending a fortune, ive had semi expensive merino ones before and they have just fallen apart

ended up getting the PX ones a short and long sleeve, if they fail or are crap ill try the decathlon ones next

I swear by Craft for baselayers, reasonably cheap, fit well and seem to work extremely well and last ages too. I've got a sleeveless, 2x short sleeve & 3 long sleeve (including the frankly excellent Gore Windstopper fronted one) and have them in rotation throughout the year. Can often been found pretty cheap online. Not cheap cheap, but cheap enough!

PX ones are good, but I paid £5/8/10 iirc for the different length sleeves last autumn.

well i had the planet x arrive

size small/medium assuming my 36-38 slim physique would be fine, but no, jeez they are small, ridiculously small! i know its supposed to be fitting but just damn odd they are that tight

if i cant fit in them god knows who they are designed for

annoying to have to pay postage out and then postage back too, nearly 8 quid down on postage alone

note to self dont buy from planet x again 🙁

I use Mountain Warehouse ones because they are my favourite and some of the best base layers I've used. The fact they are only £6 on sale makes them all the better.

Don't bother with merino if you plan to sweat at all.

I’m 5’9 and about a 40” chest I’d guess. Stocky rather than slim / athletic and could do with losing a few lbs right now. Large fits as a compression fit for me.
