I'm thinking about building up a cheap 29er as something to ride on the (very xc) local trails, so short travel and snappy (although I'll be using a rigid fork). I want to keep the budget low (£500ish). I can use the drivetrain and rigid forks off another bike to help this! But could spend a bit more for something nice!) so am looking at cheap frames (medium size / 18"ish).

The obvious choice is a 29er inbred for £130. I've toyed with the chinese carbon idea (roughly £250 off ebay), but I tend to get a bit silly with launching my bike off of things so think this probably isn't the best idea!
An inbred comes to about £400 using spare brakes gears and fork, or £500 if I get a new drivetrain.

Is there anything else I should be considering? An on-one lurcher frame or similar (used) would fit the bill nicely, but I don't see many for sale 🙁

Oh, and I'm not to keen on ally frames... steel or carbon is the way forward!

Think you've answered your own question. I ride mine every winter and for the money, it can't be beaten.

Hmm, interesting. Nuke, I still think I'll go steel rather than ally. The steel frames I've been on have ridden nicer, and it's easy to fix!

How does the on-one dirty harry compare? Seems to be an older frame, and I generally think that carbon production is developing every year so would rather go as new as I can if I find a used carbon frame
