So I’m trying to assemble a relatively budget hardtail for my nephew and the 3 items causing me the biggest headache to get within budget are forks / wheels / crankset and bb.

The frame is the Brand-X HT01 which as I understand is the previous generation Vitus Sentier frame. It’s got a 73mm bb and a 135 qr rear end.

So I believe I need a non boost crank for it.

I get what I’d need with Sram as their boost / non boost spacing is built into the chainring not the cranks.

But with shimano it’s not immediately obvious. Most of the cranks in stock seem to list a chainline which I believe is boost - I think I need 49mm but struggling to find much in shimano 1x with that spacing detailed. Am I missing something?

Hoping to pay £70 or less for the cranks with 32t chainring if Shimano (I have a spare ht2 bb).....I’ve ordered an 11 speed mech / cassette / shifter.

The Deore M5100 has a 52mm offset & they say compatible with 142 or 148 rear axles.
I run the Deore M6100 1x10 which is the same offset. M6120 is 55mm & boost only.

Can you not just use a cheap 3x crank with 104 BCD and run a narrow/wide on the middle ring bolts?

I have considered the cheap 3x option but not really finding many. The shimano ones I’ve found are 96bcd but they don’t state of normal 96mm or asymmetric so I’m about loathe to take a punt and then find I can’t get a nw or only an expensive one.

I remember a few years back I picked up a triple slx for £40 with bb and stuck a superstar ring on it. That sort of thing would be perfect.

So is 52mm chainline ok for non-boost? I thought that would put the chainring in a bad place for the lowest gear on the cassette?

Actually I could get an slx m672 triple for £53 I think. It might even come with a ht2 bb but I have one anyway. It says 96mm bcd - but I don’t think this one is asymmetric so I might be able to get a cheap nw ring for it - I’d just need to workout what bolts to run once I’ve got it all in my hands.

There are lots of old triple ring HT2 cranks on ebay.

XT M770
SLX M660
Deore ?

I picked up some XT M770 Cranks for £35 and fitted a £12 narrow wide ring on from Amazon.
The rings even come with the short bolts to fit a triple.

the m672 is symmetrical 96bcd. You can tell as the middle ring is 30t, which is smaller than a 104 c/set can handle.

pretty much all the other Shimano 96s are asymmetrical

you can get hold of plenty of asymmetrical 96 rings. Symmetrical 96s are less numerous but they are out there.

I'm getting good mileage out of stupid cheap Snail chainrings off eBay. And they some in all shapes and sizes.

That Raceface cranks is only £69.99 with a 175mm crank and 34t ring. This bike is for a fairly tall 14 year old (5’10 already, and expected to get taller as already a size 11.5 shoe size) but he’s not that fit. Got an 11-46 cassette but thinking about sticking on a 30t chainring to make hills super easy.

If I struggle on price I may just whip the NX Eagle dub crank off one of my bikes and buy a non boost steel chainring I guess - good excuse to get a carbon replacement 😝
