The bridleway to Hollins Cross from Edale is a bogfest. Would Chapel Gate be a better option to get out of Edale Valley and if so, how do I spot it off of Edale Road? I'd rather not do the the whole climb on road. Thanks
Ride up the hill out of Edale towards Mam Nick for a couple of hundred yards. Go through the big gate on the right hand side of the road that leads to the obvious, massive track going up the huge hill. Ride up that. You can't miss it.
It's a good wet weather option out of Edale now, yes, better than squelching over Rushup anyway.
It's a fairly obvious gate. Just as the main road starts to veer left, the gate is on the right. About 300 yards from the bottom of the hill.
Whether it's better than the road - I don't know.
In the summer when I could just about drag my lowest gear up it, it was kind of ok. But last time I did it, it was a walk. Either way it's unpleasant.
At least you get the sunken track at the end to put a grin back on your face (if you like that sort of thing).
(Rushup edge is also boggy if you go hollins or the road way up).
It's definitely a dryer way up.
Bear in mind that if you're using it to get to the Castleton or Cavedale etc, you're still going to have to squelch along Rushup Edge towards Mam Nick. It's a lot easier and quicker on the road, but I didn't say that.
If you're heading for Roych Clough/Hayfield, you're all good.
Thanks
There are no marking or signs on that gate to chapel gate but there is a post that looks like it once had some signs on but have mysteriously vanished, almost as if someone was trying to through people off going up there ?!!
