Gravel bike, currently running 1x10 GRX. Would like to upgrade to 1x11 GRX Di2. Wheels can take an 11 speed cassette, so do i just need the right hand shifter and rear mech (plus cassette), or am I missing something?

Cheers

shifter

battery and charger

rear mech

Bluetooth module

junction box, charge port

4 x suitable length cables

the interesting bit is that the only true GRX bit you need is the rear mech. It's also mostly plug and play and interchangeable (with some exceptions)

Yeah you can get really creative.

I have a pair of TRP Hylex brakes/levers with the climber shifter mod and an XT di2 rear mech. Junction box is under the stem (although e-tube would be cleaner, it's quite exposed) and battery up the seatpost.

I'd be tempted to go for the wireless 105 STis rather than GRX, but they may only be available in 12 spd, haven't checked.

Bizarrely the 12 speed wireless shifters still need a wired connection to get firmware updates

If it’s the same as 11 speed Ultegra (and not the new semi wireless 12 speed kit) then you’ll need the shifter, front junction box A (how you charge / update the di2 system), junction box b, battery and rear mech. Plus the wires to connect it up. So 1 x wire from rear mech to junction b. 1 x wire from junc b to battery. 1x wore from junc b to junc a. 1 x wire from a to shifter.

If you’re not running a dropper then the battery then goes inside the seat tube is the cleanest option.

for junction A you have several options:

XT off-road display which sits on the handlebar and shows you gear numbers

Under stem one (what I have) which is usually the cheapest option

End of handlebar one - you need to have a handlebar you can route wires inside for this one.

I have got a new handlebar and end of bar junction box to go on my bike when I get a chance - but as I’m 2x11 I need to mess about with loads of wires to make the end of bar junction box work.

Edit - just to add - if you want to be able to Bluetooth connect to di2 then you’ll need a Bluetooth inline module as well. Maybe the xt display might have that built in already?

full 12 speed di2 group sets are around a grand,  if you use all your eBay skills I reckon you could build a 1 x GRX for sensible money. Rear mech is probably worth getting new but the rest can be second hand, I would even consider the ST-R785 Di2 shifters

If you use a newer Garmin the wireless module is well worth it - it will allow you to customise di2 settings from the garmin and (more usefully IMO) use the magic buttons on top of the hoods to control the garmin.

@thepurist - how new does your garmin need to be? I’ve got di2 with a Bluetooth module and an edge 530…..never considered linking them

edit - ah I’ve got R785’s which don’t have the extra buttons
