I've just ordered an 11-42 11 speed cassette to pop on my gravel bike. Currently it has an 11-51 on.....I'm hoping to stick that on my mtb and go to 1 x on that.

So, will I need to shorten the chain on the gravel bike? Also, I'm hoping to get another wheelset so I've got a 'road' and 'gravel' set. The road wheelset will have the 11-42 on, then I'm thinking an 11-46 on the gravel set. Would I be able to change between the two different cassette sizes without causing issues? Shifter/mech setup is 11 speed Deore....

The slackest it will be is when on the 11 so no need to shorten. You might get a little more chain noise, depending on how straight and aligned everything is. No harm in trying it.

As for swapping between the two, depends how worn it is and how well they wear together. When everything is new it'll all work fine

Ah cheers for that.....I think over time the road cassette would naturally wear more as I commute some days so will naturally get more mileage. Might take off the current chain and pop it on my mtb when I convert that to 11 speed. It's only about 150 (mainly road) miles old currently.
