I've finally purchased the 'hardcore' hardtail and as brilliant as it is, I've found I'm slightly too far forward over the bars compared to my fs.

The hardtail came with a 40mm stem and the stem length on my fs is 60mm.

I'm happy with everything else set-up wise. Seat position is spot on.

Has anyone else found this an issue on a new bike, is it something to get used to or have you changed the stem length?

I can't remember the last bike I bought that I didn't change the stem length. You may want to try getting used to it, but there's no harm in making the change if you prefer it.

I have about a dozen stems in my spares box that I am endlessly swapping to find a suitable length. The saddle on my Salsa wore out, and the one I replaced it with put my sit bones further forward for the same saddle rail adjustment, so I swapped the stem! Changing your stem length is like adjusting the seat in your car - you might be lucky in that it's right to begin with, but it's expected that you might want to change it!

You can get pretty decent stems for cheap, try those first and then bling up if you want later. Then keep the cheap ones for adjusting bike fit in the future 🙂

Try Planet-X for super cheap stems if you want to try stuff out.

Try raising the bars first. Go as high as you can.

If it's still not feeling right, consider either going to a 35mm length stem or getting a higher-rise bar (or both as I have on my trail bike).

I always assumed this was standard practice.

Thanks for the tips and advice.
Going to try and find a cheap stem for 35mm bars now 🙂

a bar with more backsweep also works to reduce reach.
