Middle and outer rings on my 3x9 SLX crankset need replacing. But I hardly use the big ring, so don't see the point in the expenditure of replacing it.
So what do I need to do to go 2x9?
Shorter crankbolts needed?
Also I may change from the standard 34 tooth middle to a 36. Will this affect anything?

I did just that. Took the 44 off. Bunged in short chainring bolts with a 36t ring. Wound the outer limit screw of the front mech in. Job jobbed. OK so you run out of gears at about 22mph but how often are you going that fast off-road?

I did this - get a bashring in place of the outer ring, adjust the limit screw and you're done!

Thanks guys. Thought and hoped it was that simple.
Bash ring - not sure i'm gnar enough for that. Don't run a bash on the triple set up, so will I need it?

Also do I just buy another middle as a replacement?

Just another middle and granny will work fine. Some people put a bash ring where the big ring use to be but if your not likely to hit stuff hard just use shorter bolts.

I put a bash on simply to tidy the crank up after taking the 44t off. I'm running 22/36 on mine and have been wondering about changing to a 34 but will see how things go.

36 / 11 top gear - should get nearer to 30 mph spinning madly

I did that and have now have got rid of the granny ring cause I never used it and use the front mech as a chain guide abs happy days keeps everything lighter simpler and in check on rough ground

Slx double cranks have different chainring tab profiles than a triple, so a slx bash off a double crankset won't fit a slx triple crank without fileing down the tabs a bit,
