Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone knows whats involved in changing the rotor size for an Avid Elixir brake.
Say, if I want to change a front from 160mm to 185mm, or a back from 185mm down to 160mm?

Is the caliper specific to a rotor size? or is it a matter of changing the adapter.

Cheers,
Alan

Nope - just change the adapter - you just get an IS/ post mount size adapter to got from 160 - 185mm

Just need new adapters, handily, a 160mm rear will do a 180 front, so you'd only need one new adapter, assuming you already have those rotors.

Ah yes, have you actually got 185mm rotors, or 180s? If 185 then I don't think the 'straight swap' front-rear on adapters will work.

Thinking about buying a set that are 185 rear and 160 front, would like to swap them around.
Think is I think they are also IS mount so I'd be looking at a post mount adapter for my fox floats.

So not sure how it would work to turn a front from IS 160 to Post 185?

Can the front 160mm rotor just be moved to the back then (which is IS 185 mm mount)?

Sorry, I'm easily confused.

Well why not buy them and if not just get some adapters? I can't see why not though? as the juicy's I have have the same calipers and have the same mounts?

If your fork is a post mount, you'll need a post-post 185mm front adapter.

And for the rear you'll need a post-IS 160mm rear adapter.

The easy way to think of it, is if the bolts go on the way the bike is facing, then it's post. If they screw in to the side, they are IS.

I'd suggest that 185 is a lot on the front though, as Elixirs are pretty powerful as they are, and 160 is more than enough 160/160 is my preferred setup.

Thanks rickon, that clears up a lot.

If the rears are set up for 185mm, can you just use a 160mm rotor instead if you want?

Yes, you'll still need a new adapter.

That is an odd set up, if you buy those brakes, I'd be doing as you suggest and swapping them around, adapters are only £5 or so.
