Got a Frog 69 a d it has been great for the last year, but I'm watching it being ridden uphill and it definitely doesn't have the range of other kids bikes.
I've a spare GX Eagle mech and shifter, so was thinking a new chain and a sram NX eagle cassette and it could ve upgraded to 12 speed and a big range.
Is it going to be as simple as that? From what I understand from reading the blurb on the NX cassette, it doesn't need the XD driver and a standard freehub - is that right?
Small 26" wheeled frame but I'm sure it is 135mm spacing in frame, so I'm thinking all I need is the new cassette and chain.
Thanks.
That, or try a smaller chainring, if they aren’t spinning out at the top end?
A dinner plate sized cassette would place the rear mech very close to the ground........I would echo Tomhowards recommendation and fit a small chain ring up front. You can also get reasonably cheap Shimano / Suntour cassettes that go up to 46 teeth. The spacing between cogs is the same as SRAM up to 11 speeds.
Ta...I'll hold off doing that for a bit and some more investigation.
Why not just get a wide range 9 speed cassettes?
Bike-Discount have this Sun Race 11-40t 9 speed for £18.00
I thought Frog was 8 not 9 speed?
Grrr... just types a load of stuff but it then logged me out when I posted!!!
Anyway, it's just a normal 135mm 26" rear wheel, as I've swapped it out for one of my spares on occasion.
Also, would need to check on my son's bike, but the current one is supplied with a 32T chainring and 11-40T cassette. And it's definitely a 9-speed on the Frog MTB range.
I don't see any reason why a 12-speed NX wouldn't work, and other people seem to be able to run 12 speed on 26" wheels...
Already running a surname cassette and a 30t ring. She likes to ride up everything - others push, she pedals so I'm thinking something to keep momentum will help...
Although I'm now also looking at a whole new bike, not so much escalated quickly, just me doing my usual thing to crack a nut!
The Frog 69 I've just picked up has a 40T cassette, does yours not DB?
Nope, I replaced that with a surname and it is 42...I think.
Just checked my spreadsheet, it was a 36T that it came with and now a 42T.
I’ve a practically new NX cassette sat in my kitchen... you’re right..normal spline freehub.
Interested??
What 9 speed stuff do you have on the frog? I’m looking to upgrade my lad’s bike to 9 speed...
Also... I’m after upgrading my NX rear mech to a GX or higher one too!!
PM me, and let me know if you’re interested in the NX cassette, or if some sort of complicated swap would interest you!!!!
