Looking to the STW massif for some advice over what to do...
I'm currently riding a 2013 Whyte t-129 with significant improvements from stock - bigger fork, Hope wheels, xt 2x10 groupset instead of the sram/avid combo etc. I really love the bike, but feeling like I'm pushing it to its limit recently, having recently progressed on to bigger, more enduro stuff than what I was riding when I got the bike I can't help but feeling a bigger bike might suit me better.
So! I'm basically wondering if I'm better off trying to shift the frame only and rebuilding from the parts off it or just starting from scratch. Money's a bit of an issue, reckon I could add on around 500 to what I get for selling on whatever I've already got. I reckon 300 for the frame (IF anyone will buy it...) or 1000 for the whole bike is what I'd get but feel free to advise/chastise me if people think I'm well off!
Stealth ad? Sure why not! Size L if anyone is interested, I'll be interested in swap deals if people are wanting to go the other way as well.
Thanks in advance for any advice given 🙂
Best value to you is probably in going down the frame route as with your extra 500 you’ll be in to tasty frame territory. 2x might be an issue though due to 1x specific frames dominating enduro.
30.9 post? Standard crank? Rear end 142/12?
Good point chestrockwell, plus 700 puts me in new rocketmax territory as well which is a thought...
Yes to all the above weeksy.
As soon as you start looking at a newer frame with boost/bigger seatpost/different PF BB it's going to start costing you both money and faff...
There is something to be said for buying an assembled bike that already works without having to ensure everything goes together yourself.
I've just bought a new frame and currently building it up for the very reason that over the years I've upgraded parts as old ones have worn out so getting a new bike with all the parts I like is either not possible or very expensive. This way I get to change the frame, and recover most of the cost from the sale of my old bike...luckily I have enough parts in my spare parts bin to build it up to a complete bike, so makes the frame swap option very cost effective. The only downside is putting dirty used parts on a nice pristine frame. Ultimately I'll end up with a bike that would be well over £3k new for around £600 or less by the time I've sold off my old bike.
Boost is really not a problem if you've got non-boost wheels, there are usually BB conversion kits and seat posts are not really a major issue and you'll want a seat post to put on your old frame when you want to sell it.
Having said that there are some stonking deals around at the moment if you're not fussy about which bike you get. A mate has just bagged a carbon Norco Sight killer (I think) with a decent spec. for just under £2k. Deals like that are hard to beat. But then I'm fussy and want my bike how I like it.
I had this dilemma this time last year with wanting something more burly than I had, with more up to date geometry. I had ok stuff that was on my existing bike that could have swapped over (new 1x for example) but once I started getting into standards I just sold the whole bike and bought a new one complete.
It sounds like you have better kit than me - and if the hope wheels can be converted to boost then that makes life easier. You can always use a shim if the new frame is 31.6 seat tube I’d imagine.
I’m not sure what £800 gets you in burly 29er land brand new - I think the Bird AM9 for example is £899 without a shock.
Maybe 2nd hand is your answer - something like a Nukeproof Mega 290?
Yeah, not a lot brand new unfortunately so I would be looking 2nd hand. I think just because theres so much more available full bike wise I'll be looking down that way, so once the frame bearings are sorted I'll list it and see what happens - no harm in trying!
Nukeproof was what I was thinking as well, but I'm seeing a fair few more spesh enduros about - hearing good things about them, and they're pretty cheap for the kit on them so will most likely go for one of those if I can get my bike shifted (big if).
Thanks a lot for all the advice guys
