[Closed] Chances of fixing broken rear light?

One of the blokes at work got a Lezyne Strip rear 150 and broke it. He was going to bin it but I was wondering if it'd be worth having a go at fixing it. The connectors to the battery are the problem. There is a piece protruding from the battery that needs resoldering to the tiny pcb. And the pices still attached to the pcb needs reattaching to the battery. Looks fiddly. What do we think - worth a go or chuck it? I have a soldering iron somewhere.

The smaller PCB looks like the protection circuit for the battery.
You might be able to solder it with a conventional soldering iron, but a small spot-welder would (in theory) be better since it will reduce the amount of heat going in to the battery.

If I was going to attempt that sort of repair, I'd make sure I can throw the battery outside at a moment's notice in case it decides to let the flames out. 🙂

As I said, I *might* be able to find my soldering iron but I am definitely not going to find a spot welder! ;0)
Good point about potential inferno.
I wonder if it could be glued using something like Araldite.

Given that one of the battery connections has become detached from the pack, the only way you'll be fixing that is with a new battery cell.

You might be able to find something the right size/voltage/capacity online for less than the cost of the rear light but you will still need to be careful when assembling it (especially so if using a soldering iron). You may well be better off trying to find something that comes with wires attached and then splicing in the original connector to the main PCB, than trying to solder a new pack directly to the little PCB.

In my opinion the protection circuit is part of the battery. That thing is pretty dangerous now as if anything metal touches both contacts it'll catch fire in a nasty sort of way.

I'm curious how it got broken like that. I have one of those and it seems pretty robust.

Set GoPro up outside.
Short it.

I'm pretty gung-ho about shonky repairs, but putting the protection back on a Lithium battery would make me think twice.

Given there's a part number on the battery and it looks like the wires would unplug from the circuit, contact Lezyne asking to buy a new (complete) battery and plugging it in would be my favoured repair.

Given the reality of the modern world, it will probably end up costing 90% of a new light though 🙁

Im not sure I’d take any risk at all, you can buy the complete light for £30, it’s not really worth it.
Imo, obviously.

Have a word with mark at mtbbatteries.co.uk?
I've just soldered a new protection circuit to a 2s2p battery pack, and I didn't die.
Got to be better to try and repair than just binning it?

The battery is only dangerous if you puncture the actual cell or have a continuous short. I have built up dozens of Lipo and Li Ion battery packs with no issues.
There is plenty of space to work before you encroach on the actual battery.
If you are confident enough to do it, scrape away a little of the plastic where I put the orange dot. Scratch the conductor underneath, as this will make it easier to solder to.
With a hot soldering iron, tin that area, let it cool. Tin the end that broke off. Now you should have two fresh shiny soldered parts, that can be soldered together quickly.

You should scratch the other two ends (red) ends too so they are easier to tin and then solder together. Tinning is adding solder to an area in preparation to actually joining.

Or you can send it to me and I'll fix it for you. Don't waste that great light!

Original battery had vented. There was the distinctive fruity smell. Probably due to corrosion as there were signs of water ingress. I fitted a battery I had removed as I am converting my rear light to run off my dynamo and a supercap.
Now the lezyne has been resurrected!

Kudos for repairing the light, and not having to buy a replacement part.
