New chain, well used XT triple and a 2.5mm spacer each side of the BB.

Chain sucking from granny to middle, being carried up the bottom of the big ring!?

Finished building a mate's bike earlier, took it out and was fine on the trail. Then it started sucking on the way back.

What tweaks would help rid this? I wondered if the front mech was at the wrong height or the mech was over shifting and needed to be more granny biased? Or is it new chain/well used rings?

Err, thanks?

I've changed chains many a time with used chainrings and not had this. Which ring is likely to be the culprit? The middle for not doing it's job or the big for sticking his beak in?

Some kind of explanation would really help, the teeth looked used but not too pointy.

It's always the chainrings you need to change.

Its the chainrings at fault, it only feels ok early on in the ride because the chain is well lubed it compensates for the worn rings

The only way I've cured chainsuck in the past is to change things, usually the rings.

Othe rpossibilities to check before spending are:

stiff link
sticking freehub
knackered mech/particularly jockey wheels
bad shifting

but I'd still change the rings. Deore rings are more durable than XT, cheaper but slightly heavier. Unless you are a weight weenie or racing at the limit then you wouldn't notice IMO.

Ok, thanks people. Mech's new, I tried his bike with featherweight shifting and it still caught and the freehub seems ok.

He's not got much cash, which do you think is the problem? Going from to granny to mid and getting picked up by the big makes me think the mid perhaps?

I guess it was cheap for a reason 😳

One spacer on each side is a little unusual, usually you get uneven numbers of spacers (one on driveside with 73mm, 2 on driveside and 1 on other side with 68mm). Not to say you're wrong of course and it's not likely to be the cause.

Does it only happen on shifting? Usually pretty easy to diagnose if it happens while set in gear.

Ah, ok. My Truvativ chainset came with one on each so I copied this foolishly when installing his :roll:. I'll stick in the other spacer for him. And yes, it's immediately after shifting but not every time.

He's told me it's decreasing, maybe the chain's stiff too?
