Basically had a big off today as my chain jumped off the cassette then fell off the front ring and jammed in the frame resulting in a very bent and knackered chain, a scratched frame on rear swing arm and a few scrapes and grazes to me.
Bike is a Giant Stance 29 2 1x12 Deore with Praxxis Cadet front ring and cranks.
So I need to order a new chain but not sure which and how many links, don’t have a split link or anyway to get chain off so it’s going to the lbs.
But want to order my own chain? Any rough idea how many links I need or do I just get the bike shop order one?

It won't come in the exact size, it'll need cut down to fit.

Count the links of the chain on the bike, before it goes to the lbs?

Just get your LBS to supply & fit the chain, that way they might still be there next time you need to use them.

+1 to use the LBS if you really don't know what to do, but then learn to remove and refit a chain as it's useful for cleaning, may need on trail maintenance, etc.

The fact it's jumped off that badly makes me wonder how old / many miles it has done - which then leads on to whether new chain will mesh on the old cassette. Again, LBS will help, but be prepared you might be in for more than the chain.

Chains done 312 miles. Gets cleaned and lubed every other ride. Bike is used once a week between March to October.
Basically when selecting the highest ring on the cassette its been skipping and came off the cassette and gone into the wheel.
Deore Rear Derailleur and praxxis Single ring up front.

Sounds like cassette should be ok then, but you need to set your limit screws

And also check behind cassette, in case chain has partially eaten through spokes

Good for going to the LBS, I guess they will use chain off a reel so they can cut exactly the links they need.
Take some biscuits along, ask them to talk through what they did, keep the knackered chain and get a multitool with a chain breaker and a couple of split links.

Have a go with your new tool and knackered chain and take 3 or 4 links plus the split links with you on the next ride. You'll be the trail fix boss!

LBS is these guys https://www.onyerbike.com/ can use either the Burnley or Blackburn one as I’m in between both.
Just realised chain does have a split link it so I’ve removed the whole chain now.
Can’t see any damage to anything other than scratches. Gonna book it in as I need the tubeless sealant renewing anyway and want to put some grippier tyres on than the forecaster oe so they can do it whilst I’m at work.

have you had cassette off - if the spokes are damaged by chain going OTT then you won't really see that until it is.

I’ll be honest no but I’ve had a feel round. The chain got more jammed on the front ring to be honest. I shifted onto highest ring on cassette it slipped off the cassette then pulled it off the front ring and jammed between ring and frame and stopped the bike dead. I carried on forward/sideways over the bars. Rear derailleur looks fine also. Bar ends and seat ripped, and forks scratched to ****. But it’s a mountain bike it’s meant to have battle scars.
Got it booked in anyway so gonna get them to have a look over it also.

Nothing to add except don't buy chains off eBay, having had a 'shimano' one jam and rip the mech hanger in half.

My experience as well. Looked just like a Shimano box but chain stretched to 0.75 after one ride and it was deep waxed!

Quite alot of fake Sram/Shimano/KMC chains on ebay. Stick with online bike shops or real shops.

Most good LBS round here run basic maintenance classes, perhaps find your local recyc-a-bike type charity & see if they do.

It's worth learning as next time you might be stuck in the middle of nowhere, faced with a long walk if you can't take a damaged link out yourself.
