He runs a commuter with a nexus and wants high gearing. He has worn out his alloy chainring - a big lad 100 kilos of pure POWA!

I cannot find him a steel unramped 42 tooth 4 bolt 104 bcd chainring - any clues?

Thanks guys - he thinks I am the bike bits oracle so help me to keep up my image and help him and his bike destroying ways!

Not steel I'm afraid, but the Aladins cave of SJS only lists one 104bcd 42t, so that may make your choice easier!

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chainrings/32-thorn-104mm-bcd-4-arm-reversible-single-chainring-332-inch-black/

The Thorn one looks durable and is reversible.

Maybe OnOne or Surly might have something?

Just use a cheap Shimano 8spd ring

Change the size of the sprocket to suit whatever ring you can find?

he is on the smallest sprocket and a 42 chainring is the biggest that fits!

If he can wait a while then Aliexpress might be good cheap:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000076560458.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.7ef0419fOo00np&algo_pvid=47e37662-f1d3-43b5-9168-7b79fbe0ff30&algo_expid=47e37662-f1d3-43b5-9168-7b79fbe0ff30-6&btsid=0b0a187915945499795351714edf93&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_

Oh I see the 'unramped' spec req now.

There's plenty of 42t+ NW 104bcd alu chainrings on there cheap - get a couple - can't see steel.

Think you'll struggle to meet all those requirements. Ramped might be your only option

Ta folks.

He went for the SJS one as above - he couldn't wait for you to come up with more options 🙂

If he doesn’t like it then I’ve a Renthal 41t unramped 104/4, or I can recommend Projection Components https://www.projection-components.co.uk/drivetrain-166-c.asp for stainless chainrings.

more and more 5 bolt as some gravel / CX and even non-race road bikes go over to 1x setups. Worth upgrading and futureproofing?
