Any advice what's still available for an old Shimano Octalink 9-speed chainset (M752?) One bike is still running this, works well but will need attention this year. I can still get chains and cassettes no issues, but all the usual chainrings now show as out of stock. Still available? Blackspire I've had good experience with, Raceface wasn't a great fit.

I'm still running an XT Octalink crankset on my bike. I'm pretty sure that granny and outer rings from the newer HTII chainsets are compatible with Octalink but that there was something about middle rings needing the grinding down of tabs to fit an Octalink set.

I've been using steel Deore inner & middle rings quite happily and they're fairly indestructible too; any 9 or 10 speed outer ring of the right BCD should work (I've got one from one or other iteration of the XT HTII) - the ring's arms might not match up in terms of width to the crankset's spider but it doesn't seem to be problematic.

As above, the steel Deore rings are cheap and last forever.

A bit of a hijack but may be relevant. I was looking at shimano chain rings last night and wondering if you can mix am and ak 10 speed rings or do the differ in some way?

Excellent, thanks. Ordered granny and middle. Can usually get a few more miles out of the outer.

CRC have a few Deore 9 speed outer rings too if you don't need anything fancy; as mentioned, depending on the chainset you have, the ring's arms may be a little out in width compared to the crankset's spider (my XT's are) but should still work.

- Edit -

Just noticed that you have an M752 which is what I'm running!

OK - got the FCM540 outer too, long overdue new transmission for the hardtail 🙂 Wonder how long the Octalink BBs will still be around?

Octalink will be around for the foreseeable future as there's at least Claris and one MTB groupset still using it
