I'm looking at some lower end shimano chainsets from the Tourney and Alivio ranges with 48-38-28 rings, but i can't establish whether they're from a 7, 8 or 9spd groupset (i need it all be 9spd really). The difficulty in working this out leads me to think it doesn't actually matter, and that i could use a chainset that was nominally from a 7 or 8spd groupset with my 9spd chain. Am i right???

9spd chain is narrower than 8/7spd chain. It won't fit properly on thicker 7/8spd chainrings.

& to hijack the thread....
Does it matter if a chainset is shimano/SRAM/campagnolo or are they interchangeable?
