You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Afternoon all, just been giving the Kaffenback a bit of a once over and noticed the chain is due replacing. I noticed the big ring is looking a bit worn, too - not knowing much about lifespan of chainrings I thought I'd throw it open to folk who know more than me.
Does this look much like it's getting worn, or has it got a bit of life left?
Ta for any help.

Looks pretty worn, not entirely to death but I doubt a new chain would mesh well with it
Ditto more or less. Will depend how picky you are, it’ll probably hook up fine with a new chain but it’s not going to be perfect.
I'd be tempted to give it a go, it doesn't have the tell tale shark's tooth/fin yet.

worst case scenario it'll skip and you'll need a new one but where the chain is steel and the ring aluminium, if there's a mismatch the chain will wear the ring out more than the other way round.
Thanks chaps, just as I feared. Would you replace both at the same time, or just the larger ring?
Big ring would be too shot for us but I’d reuse smaller ring. If buying new chain I’d look at two new rings but only if good deal and put smaller into stores.
Thanks very much. Just found a couple of replacement rings on Planet X, so I'll do the whole lot. I'm a bit gutted really because I'd expected a chainset to last longer.
Not at all clear cut to me from the pic. I'd try a new chain and see.
Looks ok. You can always reverse it to get extra life out of the teeth. I do than on my fixed wheel, but shifting is obviously not an issue.
Forget about a new chain. The last time you rode the bike did the gears work OK?
Check the chain and see if there is any damage or cracks. If it looks OK and still works then keep running it.
I bought a replacement set of gears for my commuter bike but it sat on a shelf for a year as my gears just kept going.
The only reason I changed it was due to using it for long distance ride over a few days and I needed reliability.
I've a set of TA rings that I bought bought 12 years ago whilst the Sunday boy at Cycle Surgery. I've had them on and off about 5 bikes over the years, and through thousands of miles and tens of chains/cassettes and never ever changed them. They look abit like yours.
Thanks for the thoughts all, they are much appreciated.
I've gone through two chains (the first one stretched past .75 on the gauge, this one just between 0.5 and 0.75) in the last 18 months of having the bike. I thought a chainring would last a little bit longer, certainly if the drivetrain is cleaned and lubed.
aluminium chain rings don't last that long get a steel replacement if you want it to go on for years... change the chain are the gears slipping after a short ride? swap rear cassette then see how it is. if the chain ring isn't any god there will be chain suck price it out as some times it cheaper to get a new crankset I just got good a deal from CRC for a xt one...
If the chain doesn't skip, then keep riding it. No idea why people endlessly change their chains and cassettes just because the measurement tool says it should go.
Keep it going I say. It’s an outer ring so has more teeth/greater contact area.
I’ve only got triples and use the middle mostly so I’ve only experiences slippage on a middle ring.
Thanks very much. I put a new chain on and cassette, and left the rings alone. Everything seems to work pretty well and there's no skipping. The only minor issue is shifting from small to big ring but I think that's an adjustment rather than wear issue.
TBH I'd probably put a new chain on it and see how it goes. It does depend on whether you want it to work or mesh beautifully and silently.
I’d expected a chainset to last longer.
The wear on chainrings pretty much depends on how early you replace your chains. Steel does resist the wear as your chain wears better though.

Thanks @philjunior - so keeping the ring on won't further wear the chain, but just deteriorate and eventually start skipping?
