I went to use my winter shopping/pub bike yesterday. Chain a bit seized up. Whipped the chain off and (after cleaning it) checked it and found it was well worn. So new chain/cassette required. A closer look showed the middle ring which I use 95% of the time was also badly worn. I had one in stock.
Â
As this bike is Hollowtech rather thasn square taper cranks the cranks came off in a couple of minutes. Then I got the bonus. I was thinking how awakward getting tight chainring bolts could be when they are the type that need a chainring nut wrench. Then remembered the last time I fitted a new chainring I also swapped to Stronglight chainring bolts which are fitted/removed using two Allen keys. Two more minutes and the new chainring from the shelf was fitted.
I had a spare chain and cassette but I ordered an 11-32 as being better for the use this bike get than the 11-36 cassette in stock.
Â
But anyway, is there a reason more bikes are not fitted with these bolts. Presumably there is a downside? Or they are a few pennies more expensive to make?
Â
I expect it will be cost. Â
The FSA crankset on my son's bike uses them. They're a lot better. Â
