Stored two chains over the winter in a jar of diesel opened the jar yesterday chains are totally rusty what the hell! how could this happen
Diesel can absorb water from the air.
Sorry, I cannot help with your problem. However, I would like to point out that "Chain storage disaster" sounds like the name of a lost album by The Fall.
Diesel? Why? Just lube them and pop them in a bag.
“Chain storage disaster” sounds like the name of a lost album by The Fall
or a song by Half Man Half Biscuit
Whereas Chain storage "disaster” sounds like a BBC headline.
If there was any water in there then the diesel would float to the top leaving the chains on the bottom in the water
Water helps, but oxygen is what is needed to oxidise. Diesel can have oxygen in it (and was it sealed tightly?) Engine oil will have corrosion inhibitors in it so would be a better bet for that sort of thing probably.
