When fiddling with the bike this evening I noticed that the chainring bolts on my XT double have some play in them. When I put a T30 in the socket I can get a little rotation back and forth, is this normal?

I don't think so.

I'm guessing that Shimano uses some sort of threadlocker on their cranks/chainring bolts at the factory. IME, it takes a lot of torque to initially loosen their chainring bolts, even brand new from the factory (adding a bash to a 2014 XTR crank). Once you "break" the thread lock, they turn pretty much like a clean thread, not resistant to turning like some threadlocked brake hardware is. I've had 20+ year old Shimano cranks on retrobikes and they seem the same...

Thanks. It seems there were a little loose, just had to put some more effort in.
