Yep - they lied to me last week too.

Item was in stock when I ordered (on Sunday).
Didn't show by Wednesday, so I emailed.
Item was dispatched Thursday morning (hmmm....)
Email reply was that it had been out of stock (despite me checking every day and it was still showing as in stock).
I emailed them to tell them this and got a curt response of "if you don't want it, send it back for a refund".

Seems to me they have created a rod for their own back. Time was when you could order on a Friday early afternoon and be pretty sure that the delivery would arrive on a Saturday morning etc etc.

I still get stuff from there but just allow for up to a week for delivery.

This is still generally fster than me waiting for an opportunity to get to my local shop which doesn't carry the same level / range of stock.

I have started using other places more too but this is because of a series of orders which lay dormant with CRC and took a bit of prompting from me to get them moving.

Ordered some shoes from their sale on Friday evening and the postie turned up with them this morning, saying 'You get a lot of stuff from these Chain Reaction people don't you, what's that all about?'

So I told him I was building my own nuclear reactor.

Well when I was a postie I should have said that to the bloke who was always buying porn films and mags! I reckon that would have been funny

They don't seem to have that much stock anymore, and are missing some key brands. Also the navigation on their website is appalling. I'm currently in the market for 2 entire drivetrains but have given up on CRC because their website is so clunky for going back and forth.

Ordered Monday and turned up this morning.
Business as usual.
Have never felt let down by CRC.

You can't trust them regarding having items in stock or not, it's pathetic.

I think that's what tabbed browsers and middle mouse button clicks are for...

I do find the fact that they don't always dispatch same day nowadays annoying particularly as they made such a point of the fact that they did.

Re the clunky website, its the misleading 'continue shopping' button that takes you back to the main page rather than the section you're in, and navigating to sections means scrolling up and down the outside edge of the screen.

My mate was there last week looking at the dispatch systems they have in place. Apparently it's very impressive and they turn over £140 million a year!

Well in their defence I've just received what I ordered on Tuesday. You might think I'd be complaining at them about that - not at all, as they sent it out PF24 on Tuesday evening. PF took 48 hours to send to the wrong depot and another 24 to get it to the right one (nothing at all wrong with the addressing).

I suppose I could complain about them using PF!

...just realised looking closer that CRC actually sent it PF48, and it only got PF24 for the last part of its journey when PF screwed up, so unimpressed with both of them. Amusing to check out "my" signature on the proof of delivery, when the delivery bloke didn't actually get me to sign!

It depends what time things are actually ordered, i believe the cut off for same day postage is about 1pm. I ordered a sombrio 'bramble' yesterday at 12.30ish and got a dispatched email from them just after 3pm, Great service.
I bet it shows up tomorrow as well.
Not long ago i would have agreed that there standards were slipping but in recent months i think all has gone back to their normal good service.
Their warranty department is excluded from that though for me but thats only because i was in need of a very quick turn around and they didn't get back to me for two weeks and in that time i had sent it to fisher and got it sorted myself

I buy mostly from the German bike shops now, much cheaper and still arrives at the same speed as CRC orders.

CRC On form!
My parcel arrived today with the post. That't less than 24hrs after ordering and still just standard delivery!
Good effort!

CRC are a big company, who are pretty good on the whole. 12 month returns, bargains and typically prompt postage. There may be a solid reason for why there has been a delay.

You'd probably prefer...

That's bang out of order! 👿 I'd sue.

suppose if this was a kidney or other organ for transplant such delays would actually be an issue..

but in the grand scheme of things... a slightly late bike part is not the end of the world is it 😉

So.... ordered a pair of shoes a month ago, stated as in stock, 2 days later an eamil explaining they are out of stock and a £5 voucher - OK service I suppose, disappointing, but at least a bit of compensation for my trouble.

Ordered another pair of shoes last week, order was stuck on 'processing' two emails and six days later - they are out of stock. Even though they were listed as in stock when I ordered.

Surely if you have an online stock system it should represent your back office operations in the warehouse?

I doubt I'll be spending any more money at CRC again, they may be cheap, but I'd actually like to recieve something I buy!

Their stock system is a pretty complex thing to manage - thousands and thousands of small items, and millions of people viewing the site.

All it takes is two of those millions of people to order an item that they only have one of in stock, and you have Buttscratcher's problem.

If they showed the number of items in stock, it would give you a better idea, but the global scale of their operation is always going to lead to these issues.

Hang on.... surely it should operate using pessimistic locking? i.e. if one item is bought the item is locked out of the system?

Pretty basic design methodology, if you're developing without thinking about something as simple as that you've got a lot of more issues than you think.
