After 1 ride I've unfortunately had a chain link start to go (it's bent) on a new Shimano 10 speed chain.
I was assuming I could just remove the dodgy link and go and shove in either a KMC or SRAM quick link. However having just spoken to a bike shop they have said you can only do this if the link that has gone is the shimano joining link. Does anyone know if this is true please? In my case I think its just a random link that's gone

Agreed. The only caveat is that you're not meant to push out the Shimano master joining pin as it's designed to be a one use thing, but apart from this you can remove any link you want and replace with a quick link.
