I've just replaced an 11-42t cassette with an 11-46t.

I've fitted the cassette. Whilst not under compression the current chain shifts to all sprockets fine. I know under compression (orange 5) I'll need a longer chain (one on order).

Being lazy, should I just fit the new chain 4 links longer (to account for the 4 extra teeth) or should I just take more time to faff about letting air out of shock and remeasuring compressed (like I did first time)?

4 teeth is two links as you only use half the cassette at a time.

I use the park tools formula and use the longest chainstay length for it.

Good point, I did think 4 extra links was a lot. Thanks

Thread hijack!

Soooo, if I'm changing the gf's gears from a 32T chainring with a 42 out back to a 36T and a 50 cassette, I need to add 6 links?

And by links are we talking pairs of links or singles?

Cheers chaps!

A link is a link so inner or outer plates.

An inner and an outer is two links.

But really just measure it, it's a thirty second job.

30 seconds of effort and thinking? I'd sooner ask a random stranger on the Internet 😉
