Hello!

Decided to change my 1x configuration by fitting a 11-46t cassette instead of 11-42. Because I got the luxury of 46t, i also decided to change the front ring from 32t to 34t and see how it goes. However i'm a bit suspicious that i didn't do a great job. On the 46t cog, the rear mech cage is almost parallel to the chain, and only one jockey wheel (top)  is  spinning. I did put a new chain with a different length than the original. I measure it by wrapping around the biggest cog and front ring, and add 2 links. Are people with the same setup seen the same?

thanks.

It's clearly too short, but you knew that already 🙂 Mine is at around 45 degrees in that position, to allow for rear suspension travel (34t oval, 11-46).

114 link chain wasn’t long enough when I swapped my 11-42 cassette to 11-46, even leaving the chainring at 32. Had to add links to a brand new chain.

I tend to install in the 10/11t first and shorten the chain just enough to load the spring in the rear mech.
Once thats good I'll shift it up to the 46/7/8/50 tooth and see if i can remove another link with the bike at full sag.
I wouldn't ever advise joining, splitting and rejoining a shimano pin though.. i use a removable link. Shimano pins links are once and done.

Thank you all! hopefully all sorted with a much longer chain now.

If its a full suss did you compress the suspension to the point the rear wheel is furthest from the chainring before measuring chain length?

What chain did you get? I also have an 11-46 cassette and was thinking of a 36 or 34 if I can find one but concerned a normal chain won't be long enough, not something I had considered.

Must be long chainstays to be a problem - I’ve got 34x11-46 on a 29er with 435mm chainstays and the chain needed links removed to be the right length.

Yes. Important. Otherwise you might damage the rear mech when doing the first jump...

I have to remove 2 links out of 118, so that will be 116 now. I didn't compress it to measure the length, just fit it, checked I had enough clearance on small cog and a decent cage angle on big cog, inspired by BearBack's reply.

I'm late to this party, but the mech cage length may be an issue. I ran a Sunrace 11-46 with a long cage XT mech, but it was right on the limit and occasionally lazy to shift into 11th, sometimes the chain missed the smallest cog entirely and wedged in between the lockring and chainstay pivot. I've gone up to a 50T(!) Sunrace cassette but I've swapped the rear mech to a medium cage. I'll try to report back after the inaugural run this weekend.
