So last night I finally fitted my 2*10 xt kit, however I'm not totally sure on the chain length. I did the usual big to big, as short as it can be, but when changing to small / small, the mech doesn't seem to go back 'far' enough. It's a clutch rear, and my thinking is that the mech spring is designed to pull back, not down on the chain, so I'll get better performance if I add a couple of links back in. Any thoughts on this?

I run 38/24 and 11-36 with a short cage mech and have the same thing where the mech doesn't have enough range. I prefer to have the chain shorter, so its ok in 24-11 position but to tight to go into 38-36 position. Since switching to 2x10 rather than 1x10 I had before I will probably at some point go back to a 11-32 cassette as the 24-36 is pretty pointless.

When you say big to big, short as it can be, shouldn't you have allowed for two extra links at this point anyway? Or have I misunderstood what you said

Ah, now I didn't add in the two extra links so this could well be the issue, however the result is that the rear mech looks like it's working to far 'forwards' in it's range.
This is however the first 2*10 system I've set up, so I'm not totally sure what the 'correct' way looks like.

Put chain big to big, without going through the rear mech and then add two links.

OK,well I think it's a little too short, so I'm going to do some fiddling. However, I then need some more chain pins, and I discover that there are several different 10 speed ones, for older chains, super narrow dura ace chains and wiggle just do '10 speed' ones. Any thoughts?
It's an xtr chain if that makes any difference at all?!
