I am slowly building up a new carbon hardtail, and slightly modifying the frame as well, as I have access to a lot of super light (50gm) prepreg carbon.
Currently modifying it to run all Cabling internally, and removing some of the chain stay layers and replacing it with my prepreg as it is much lighter and stronger (running at 0,+45, and -45 degrees).

Whilst I was at it I thought I might make my own chainguide, I am thinking of running 2x10 or 1x10 and was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what would work well with a chainguide which is not currently being utilised by anyone?
Or any obvious mistakes or problems you currently have with your chain guides?

Take a Blackspire Stinger, replace the alloy backplate with a carbon one. You've finished. Have a cup of tea and congratulate yourself.

Sliders work for the lower too, if anything they work better as it always seems to be that one which seizes first. I've a Straitline silentguide and it's as good as they say it is, it's probably in my head but feels like less resistance than the stinger it replaced.

If it's a hardtail then I'd make something that guided the chain onto the chain ring without actually contacting it at the top as there's no need on a HT. Then don't bother with a lower guide and just use a clutched mech which will be lighter an probably work better without adding any resistance.

If it's for one chainring I'd decide what size I was going to run and builld the bottom guide into the frame's chainstay construction with zero adjustability, one bolt and a jockeywheel between the guide frame.. for the top I'd incorporate a threaded mount in the lower seat tube to bolt an E13 (SRS) plastic upper guide plate assembly straight into.

Reasons - mud clearance and stiffness. far too many guides suffer from problems when exposed to huge amounts of mud.. and all carbon BB/ISCG guides have been designed with weight savings as a priority and flex far too much.

if you think you might need chainring bash protection, incorporate two taco mounts under the BB shell/chainstay yoke

SL Silentguides are not actually all that great at all.
