I have a habit of bending mech/hanger mid ride and then the chain jumping off into the spokes. 3 times now it's then become jammed between the cassette and hub flange, in one case I had to remove the cassette when back home to free the chain. Does this happen to anyone else and what can I do about it?

First up stop bending mechs! How it that a common fault, what are you hitting them on?

If you do then wind the limit screws back in so the chain can't get behind

My legs start to pack in when I get tired and I end up falling off or dropping the bike quite often when I try to get off. I'm tempted to buy one of those plastic spoke protector things that come on some bikes...

Get yourself one of them plastic doohdads they put on cheapie bikes' rear wheels. Fits behind the cassette to prevent a lack of tuning from causing damage. It's not a great look but performs a function.

Edit. You beat me to it.

That is exactly what they are there for - to protect the spokes.  Check your spokes for damage.

It will just jam in there, if your struggling towards the end of ride to the point where you are falling off getting off then maybe back the distance off a bit until you build up some more fitness? Or at least try and head off the non drive side of the bike

Unfortunately that's never, chronic medical condition means it's only going to get worse. Thanks for the offer sillyoldman it's got to be worth a try! Coupled with improving my falling off 🙂

Kid's bikes often have a bracket that fits on the dropout and protects the mech. Like this.
