Need a decent chain checker for 1x11. Any advice?

Or should I just use a rule?

I use Wippermann Connex Chain Wear Indicator, it is cheap and accurate as it measures over long section of chain.

There is a page somewhere that describes why this type is better (isolates rollers iirc).

The Pedro's one I linked is the same design. There is also a newer cheaper Shimano one that does the same thing.

Ruler. It's not rocket science. Chain checkers are an expensive way of getting a worse answer.

What if chain checkers are designed to suggest you need a new chain earlier? 😮
