The title says it all I guess. The reason for the topic is advice. Is it possible to beg borrow or steal about 6 links for a shimano chain and expect it to last me till payday (25th) without breaking?

Not ideal but is it possible?

I you live near me (Bucks) you can have an old chain.

Although also getting a couple of quick-links, a chain tool and knowledge of how to use them may also be handy.

My chain broke 40km into the 100km Honc one year. I just singlespeeded it...could you not have done that?

(unless you are already SS - in which case I guess the 1st break would have done ya....)

I'm sure anyone would give you that - you could use the chain from one of my bikes nae bother for a few weeks if you're in Manchester. Or a decent LBS would give you 6 links I'm sure to get you on the trails.

Re-read my post and it looks like I'm on the scrounge. I meant going to my lbs and scrounging from them

You could make a whole chain out of powerlinks if you wanted to, it'll be fine. Is there a reason for the chain snapping? My front mech used to twist under suspension compression and the chain would get trapped and snap.

It could be a bent chain tooth.. or it just broke again where you rejoined it.
I never rejoin them, just add another split link.

I locked myself out of work garage where my bike is stored by day and had no choice but to walk home 5 miles with heavy bag. Not such a long way but was after 10PM when I left and I had been up since 6 and was ready for my tea.

Surely power links just the outer plates so you will need some inners as well. As has been said you may have been able to SS it, just to get you home. One advantage with fitting new Sram chain each time is I get to use the old power link as a spare for the camel back.

I am sure that the LBS will have some old chain that they can let you have.

I believe chain broke because the conditions i was riding in was atrocious, very gritty and muddy. The gears were grinding as I hadn't set them up properly which meant i couldn't use the full 27 .... Prolly limited to about 10 gears which meant attacking the terrain in the wrong gear. Possibly the drive train is in need of some tlc.

Yeah I could have ridden single speed but was so pissed off I didn't even think about that (noob). Last day of my annual leave from work and so wanted to go out in the bike tomorrow, now gutted and due to Xmas I'm totally skint which means buying things is not likely to happen. Just sold my zaskar too

Thanks for the replys guys

Getting the links... Most chains are too long then you cut the end off, right? I save mine for repairs but it seems like the sort of thing an LBS may have lying around. You're a bit far from me to have one of mine!
