Here's a specific question....

Going to Whinfell with the family for the first weekend in September.

If I get a pass to go riding one evening, what time would I need to set off in order to drive to Keswick to do Skiddaw/Ullock in order to be back in the car before it goes dark!!! I'm a very average rider, nowt special fitness wise but used to a bit of lakes tech (but don't take stupid risks!!)

I'd like to tick Skiddaw off the list and whilst we're up there it would be a great opportunity. Don't want to have to consider lights though (I don't have any.)

Whinfell to Keswick would be about 40 minutes, maybe a bit less. Park up by the swimming pool.

About 3 hrs ish for the loop from Keswick. Allow a bit more time for the inevitable mechanical/ having a look before committing!

Sunset is just after 8 in the first week of September.

Rough guess at 2½hrs riding time and 1hr total travel. So leave Centre Parcs around 6ish.

Ullock is techy in places so take it easy!

Factor in getting your car out. You need special permission and can’t just drive out of the gate.

There is great riding at Pooley Bridge/Ullswater, much closer.

That Must be a new thing, since last time we were there in spring, we often nip out in the car, all you need is your wee sticker on display, done it loads of times, mainly to get to Angel lane chippy... 😊

Not really much closer tbh. Mibbe 10 mins less?

More like 15 each way so a 30 minutes saving. Which on a weekender with the family ‘might’ count for a lot.

Aye, true for pooley bridge, another bit on for high level stuff on Helvellyn, which I'm guessing the OP really wants.

Edit - keswick actually 3 mins less than glenridding, But its11 mins more dricing than pooley bridge, on Google maps.

If you're struggling for time, up Keppel cove and down sticks n seldom seen would be a fair bit quicker than skiddaw n ullock pike, unless you push up carlside to get onto ullock, which misses out the joy/terror of a solo ride off of the scree....🤣

False. You don't need special permission and you can just drive out of the gate.

A couple of years back I drove to and parked at Haweswater (20-30 minutes early in the morning) and did Nan Bield/Kentmere/Gatesgarth loop, that was alright.

If you have a road bike, you can ride from the gate and go tackle the climb up Geat Dun Fell.

Fair enough. Remember it being a huge pain at Sherwood so never tried at Whinfell.

Good news OP!

Haha, this is very true!!

I'd specifically like to tick Skiddaw off, never done it and to do it from home means a lot of things aligning.... Day off work, well timed nursery drops etc', so this could be a good opportunity.

If I get a smaller window I might head to pooley bridge just to get a ride in.

Never been to centre PARC's before either so I'm looking forward to that to
