Hi

Been offered some mavic wheels with shimano hubs but they have centre lock discs. I’ve never seen this before always used ones with screws holding the disc on. What’s the pros & cons of these centre lock? Will they work just the same.

Thanks
Tom

They work the same, you use a cassette tool to tighten and loosen them. It’s less fiddly than the screws.

Pro’s - only one thing to screw on/off when changing discs.
There are adaptors to allow you to run 6 bolt rotors if you need to.

Con’s - you need a specific tool to do it.

Makes no difference to the performance of the brakes.

If you only have six bolt rotors, you can get adapters that allow you to use them with centrelock hubs rather than buying new rotors. I am using the solid Shimano ones rather than cheaper, lighter aluminium adapters you can pick up on eBay, but both types use HTII bottom bracket fittings rather than cassette tools for installation.

Thanks everyone for the heads up I’ve honestly never seen them 😂 I’ve just crawled out from under a rock.

Some do use cassette removal tools.

Great system but follow the torque recommendations as they can work loose if not torqued up properly. Had a few instances of this in my shop days and it was always traced back to incorrect torque.

If fitted correctly it's a great system, rock solid, quick to work on and lighter to boot, I run centerlock on almost all my bikes now.

That's why I went with the (steel) Shimano adapters rather than aluminium - let me just adopt my b@st£rd tight default without worrying about stripping out threads. The standard centrelock rotors I was running before that were great, just spin 'em on and off with a handled cassette tool.

I've got 2 180mm CL rotors I took off my bike after a few rides if you wanna em for a nominal fee.
