Cav has said he's taking an "indefinite" break from cycling as he's been diagnosed with Epstein Barr Virus (again)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/45340482

I've been watching him this year and he was every so slightly off the pace, and now we know why. Hope he makes a full recovery, but gutted that we won't see him in the Tour Of Britain

Poor guy. I can imagine how he must have felt when he fell out of the TdF, but as he says, at least he now has clarity.

That massively sucks for him, not much he can do apart from allow time to recover.

I found out the hard way that you can relapse with EBV, wasn't as bad the second time, but it still sucked balls

I know how he feels! Five weeks off already. Hope he’s back in the spring.

ever so slightly off the pace

He looked ****ed TBH, not entirely due to this condition either i’d imagine.

He could do with a break, he’s raced or trained constantly for the last ten years at the highest level. Even when not in competition you need to keep the wheels turning just to stay in touch.

I hope he goes get a tan, takes his family along with him.

Hope we get to see Cav at his best again in the future. A great rider and an entertaining personality.

qtip +1 - but if this was to be the end then he can walk away with his head held high. Multiple stage winner, World Road champion, World Track champion, Monuments, GT leaders jerseys, GT points jerseys,Olympic medal, and on form simply the best sprinter of his generation despite being a slip of a lad compared to the muscle men.

He's also been unlucky with illnesses and injuries at times when he was at his peak, and without those would IMO have smashed the stage win record.

Simply a legend!

I'd guess he's probably out until retirement in reality. He's achieved loads and all he really has left to shoot for is that TdF stage-win record and each passing year makes that less likely both due to age and the competition.

The palmares he has is fantastic so there's no shame in looking at what he'd need to do in order to be at the front again and thinking "**** that, I'm going to enjoy my life and family"

I kind of hope he retires, rather than going out with a load of weak results

Just move to doing enduro like other racers.

I think retirement might be best, but if it is then at least he went out with style on his last full stage.

Knocking his pan in just to finish and then head butting a journo.

Wiggins leading out Cav to take the win on the Champs Elysees in 2012 is one of my all-time favourite moments in road racing.

If this is to be the end, one of my abiding memories won't be of anything he won, but of how he lost - that last stage on this year's TdF when he knew he was nowhere near the time cut off but still rode it home. That said a lot about the man.

Lucky enough to see him win a tour stage back in 2011. Also really impressed with the way he set the pace up the climb for 5 or 6 laps of the Bristol circuit stage of the Tour of Britain a few years ago to stop any break away and help secure the overall for Steve Cummings.
