Are you 12 years old?

Spoiling someone else's day out is not big or clever.

To be fair to the OP, Cavedale is almost always wet, it's basically a trickle of water over limestone and there's very little in the way of grip or options of where to go when it's full of walkers. You pick your line and go.

That said, I wouldn't do it on a Bank Holiday Sunday unless it was crack of dawn or near sunset.

I'm aware of Cavedale and have ridden it a number of times but thanks for the advice... 🙄

I was pointing out that it's not big or clever to be splashing people.

It's an excellent descent, definitely worth sessioning sections.

To the walkers you probably look like an out of control cyclist, when I ride Cavedale that's basically the case. Bank holiday Sunday isn't the optimal time to ride it as said above

No.

Just No.

It's a descent in a honeypot tourist area which is used by many, many walkers out of Castleton. The idea of 'sessioning' it is not appropriate at all, given that it would involve pushing up again and again.

The sense of entitlement exhibited by so many mountain bikers is a really irritating feature of the hobby; be a bit more aware of the idea of sharing outdoor spaces and we would all get along much better.

I disagree.

Sessioning intourist areas on a busy sunny day is great fun. You have both moving "trail features" and some jolly folk who sometimes clap when you get it right OR wrong! 😀

@crikey we'll have to agree to disagree on this, I've generally found Cavedale to be pretty quiet but then I usually go away from the busy times. By sessioning sections I'm happy to wait for a clear run, when trying to ride it in one go you have to navigate around people wherever you find them

I'm happy to do so 😀 ; I think the way that certain areas are used, and this is something partly promoted by the mags, will lead to further conflicts in the future. I think we have to be sensitive in the way we use outdoor areas, and we do have to behave in a way that we would like to see reciprocated.

And I was pointing out that on occasions, it's simply not possible to avoid it. I wouldn't do it intentionally but when you're riding down what is basically a narrow river, it's going to happen - there simply aren't enough places for walkers to step out of the way or for riders to change their line or stop.

As I also said, I simply wouldn't ride it at busy times - it would be frustrating for me and annoying for walkers.

No offence intended, no 🙄 needed.

Everytime we've ridden it walkers have grinned/chatted as we passed.

If it looks tight stop and give way to the walker.

You meet grumpy people in all walks of life......Yesterday we also met lots of happy folk.....but as we did this section first at 8ish I guess we met a hardcore rambler who did not like bike.....

Cavedale is probably one of the trickiest paths to walk up or down in the Peaks. Its very very uneven, shiny faced rock, a stream running through etc etc. So for a cyclist who is (lets face it down there) barely in control (as you need momentum to make it down there). It'll rankle anyone if you continue riding past them (as its also close in parts). To ride close enough to splash someone- sorry that is too close down there if that happens. I'm firmly on the side of a walkers perspective if you carry on riding and they haven't managed to step aside properly. Its an ankle-breaker/sprain in many parts there for walkers.

So what if it stops you 'cleaning the descent'?

I take your point, to a point.

Momentum as you say.....so sometimes stopping and braking in the conditions you described could be argued as equally or possibly more dangerous - and I didn't clean it, first time doing it would have made that a tough ask. And also the walkers we passed were on the wide grassier sections.

I probably didn't help myself by slightly embellishing the 'splashing' element in my eagerness to post what a great morning doing new stuff that I had, had.

Still, no harm done.
