I've got a conference up in Glasgow in a week and with it being work related I am required to drive up the day before to ensure I'm not too tired 😉 So I've had a gander and Cathkin braes mountain bike trails came up.

Basically, what are they like and is it worth taking a bike up?

I don’t think I would for Cathkin, but as you’re driving Mugdock and the Kilpatricks are in easy reach too

There's a bit of everything there (XC trails, orange trail, pump track). Kept me entertained for a couple of hours. Nice views over Glasgow so if it's not much hassle bringing the bike, do it!

It is fine and worth a play around if you are in the area...

What DickBarton says. Not worth a trip in their own right but decent if you’re in the area.

Comrie is 60mins north of Glasgow. I would go there.

There's actually loads of trails kicking about if you know your way around, been loads of unofficial added, the main trails are still the best though, 4 quick downhills all spurring off one climb, easy to do loops on. The pump track is cool. You can do variations on the whole blue trail to make it better.

Not far from the city centre and plenty to keep you busy for an hour or two. Although there is other stuff close by to get the best out of them you would need more time or someone to show you around. If the weather looks ok I would go for a spin. Decent views of Glasgow to offset all the c**p in the woods.

Thanks for the tips, I've just realised I basically drive straight past AE forest, is that a better option?

Ae is a mile better. Cathkin is basically a compact race circuit with some newer off piste lines. As some have said, it’s ok, but not first choice for many locals, with more interesting riding to the north of the city, Mugdock and the like. I live 10 mins from Cathkin and don’t bother riding there unless I’m coaching.

It is however a bit of a nemesis for me, it has lots of loose gravelly corners and I used to ride it a few times a week, until the inevitable happened, twice, with big crashes cos I was going too fast !

Where are you staying, and how much time are you expecting to have? Lots more riding at Ae, but if you have an evening to kill there's very good riding to be had nearby

Smack bang in the city centre near the Royal Concert Hall, travelling up Wednesday afternoon so planning on a ride on Wednesday evening, conference Thursday, back home after that.

Not a huge amount of time then. Cathkin would probably be a reasonable way to spend an evening. Everythings easy to find, so you aren't wasting time trying to find the natural trails up the Kilpatricks or whatever.
If I wasn't loaded with the cold I'd have offered to guide you up the Kilpatrick Hills trails. Ah well.
