Had this great rear light for three years now, haven't used it for about 9 months. Replaced batteries and it flashes briefly, but pressing the ON button does nothing. Is it dead?

There are no screws or points to lever it open.

Any thoughts?

Mine does exactly that if I put a bad battery in it (for reasons unknown I have one nearly-dead rechargable AA which I never throw in the bin and every couple of weeks it ends up in a light). Have you got any others?

Just bought new batteries. Non-rechargeable.

When I put the batteries in part way, the light works OK. But I can't close the back as it pushes the battery in 'too far' (to where it should actually sit) and then the light stops working. Some sort of connection problem?

Dirty battery tabs? Were the old batteries corroded? This could affect the contacts so try a bit of sandpaper on the contacts to clean any deposits off.
