Am after a heavy-ish hooded softshell for the winter commute/general cadging about in.
Ideally close-fitting and long arms, anything out there to recommend?

If you're a brand-whore, gnore this: Dare2Be. Just as good as the pricey ones.
These are nice, work well and doesn't really look like bike wear when down the pub.

Have seen D2B, sorry but I didn't think they are as good as branded ones! Fit wasn't great for me either IIRC.
Intrepid apparel do one, bit pricy but looks decent. Royal racing also do one.
I liked the look of the Howies one.
I've got one of these and wear it ALL the time:-

Mr_mills - I have one too and wear it all the time, it's not water-resistant any more 😐
It's a bit too parky at the moment, need something heavier like my old Race Face Hoodlum with the self-destroying zio.
i was gonna suggest the surface one too al, mine's ace still. get another! it's exactly what you're looking for.

Just as good as the branded ones apart from all the falling apart they do. Poor fitting, poorly constructed, cheap quality stuff. I have owned two which fell apart.
Mine fell apart as well!DezB - Member

If you want a brand at a sensible price go to Screwfix and buy a Helly Hanson from their trade range.
Great soft shell at a decent price. You're not paying through the nose for something 'cycling specific'.
Had one for three years and swear by it in winter.
Got a Rab Shadow @ Go Outdoors recently for the same purpose, superb but pricy.
I have a moon one. It's a climbing brand but looks fine for the pub.
This one - http://www.bananafingers.co.uk/moon-soft-shell-jacket-p-834.html
I got a Cragg Hoppers Bear Grylls one from TK Max the other month. Well nice it is too

Fair enough, they are crap then!
Dunno what the hell you did with em though!
Had three Dare2Be kids softshells and the zip puller has fallen off them all....
I've got a Surface one (clothing branch of Charge) and it is spot on - not that heavy, but I've worn it on cold February walking breaks with just a thin merino base layer under.
Their shorts are good as well!
Edit - D'oh! probably the same one mr mills recommended about 9 hours ago!
Bah.
Been scouring the internet, tried TKMax and various other retailers, can't find anything affordable with a decent cut 🙁
I've found a RF Hoodlum online but it's got a minging print all over it.
Maybe try Swrve for a weather proof hoodie, cycling fit without looking too cycley.

Cheap, long lasting (had mine for about 4-5 yrs), long enough sleeves for riding, hangs a bit lower at the rear, nice high collar and cheap.
+1 snugflex, if you can get hold of one 😉
I ALREADY OWN A CHARGE/SURFACE SNUGFLEX THANKS.
Thanks for the other recommendations. they all look long in the body/short in the arm for me (long arms, short back). Can't find that Decathlon one in the UK website 🙁
I just received today a Dakine Airlift jacket which might be what you are after. Various prices online below rrp. Its replacing my Raceface Hoodlum? jacket
How does it compare? I loved my Hoodlum until the zip broke and the replacement had the daft knitted cuffs.
Montane Dyno. Although given the heavyweight request maybe the Montane Attitude
I literally unpacked it when I got in from work. I've got a large and it is a little bit more roomy than the race face (also large), but not baggy. Longer in the arms and body as well which is good as the arms of the race face were always too short, but the arms are not baggy. I'm 5'11" and 11.5 stones so fairly skinny and I'm really pleased with it. On first glance it seems very similar, i.e. similar thickness overall with same fleece inner. Does not have the back pocket of the race face, but has hand warmers and the big zip vents. Mines black and so far seems a very suitable replacement.
There's been a few different Raceface Hoodlums, mine is plain black with just a wee raceface logo on one shoulder. For some reason it has a cooling vent in one arm but not the other, and the zip's not great, but it's otherwise a nice bit of kit.
Montane Dyno
Is ace. But not thick or warm. Far from it.
.
Montane Krypton is much warmer, and more windproof, and more showerproof. But is not casual wear really. It *is* my favorite bit of kit at present and our staff uniform as I was so impressed..
Ta, oddly at 6'0.5" and 12.5 stone I liked the fit of my M Hoodlum!
Surprising, but I do seem to be an odd shape with short legs, long body, long arms and wide shoulders. Things rarely fit me!!
😳

Check out link below. The company makes snowmobile and motorcycle clothing. Really is super good quality, fully waterproof and warm.

TheGingerOne - I have relegated my RF jacket to night riding duties, where it is doing a good job, so no more embarrasing turning up in the same jacket moments 😆
Oh, and did I mention the snugflex 😉
Same RF as Northwind described, loved it but found it way too hot for riding in
Zip went also but got MiL to replace it (she good like that)
Still use when walking the dog etc but generally replaced with some Royal thing that is very nice ( and has slightly longer arms) Not sure on model but it's black with red zip and detailing! Cost £40 when CrC had that big clothing sale back around August/September time
Thanks all. I may try that Dakine one.
It's just for my 25m commute & dodging about town/pub when it's cold (like now).
What about the Royal Alpine Storm?
null
Saw that jambers...and a bloke came into the shop with one on so I tried it on! A bit heavy and didn't look too windproof sadly.
It looks like what I want is unavailable (cycoling cut, with hood, decent fabric, like a Hoodlum)
EDIT oops I see you can buy Hoodlums!
2nd EDIT bah they're all the ones with the minging print on the front or with the daft cuffs 😡
I was in TKmaxx the other day and they had a large selection of softshells at great prices, check them out.
Condor Softshell. Very similar to the Triple Aught Design (TAD Gear) but nowhere near the cost. Great with a decent fleece underneath.
Hmm TKs by never have any 🙁
Cheers Aphex, that may do the trick!
The Dakine one is half price at[s] Extremepie.com and if you google there's a 10% discount coupon - got mine for £64.[/s] er, can't find it, hang on.
Well, that's weird. When I ordered mine they had all sizes available and some on Ebay, now can't find them at all.
Oh well, there are still a couple on ebay for £75 & £80
Ta Dez, with some help from theorangeone I think the Dakine will be too baggy. As fit is paramount I may not risk mail order.
I rode in in my Prism today to see how that would be. In fact it wasn't too hot.
Has anyone got the merino planetx hoody that can comment on fit. Looking for something to stick to my skinny frame?
