trying to work out what size I want - have used a borrowed pair (ewww, I know) that were pretty snug but a bit of a stretch/give would've seen them just right (mostly around the thigh was where they were tight).

I'm told that the next size up (XXL) is quite a bit bigger.

I liked the pad so yes I do want to buy this brand if I can be sure they'll fit right. I know I could try on the next size but still won't tell me if they'll loosen as they wear in.

I would go at least 2 sizes up from normal. The first time I bought some castelli 'italian' sized shorts in my normal M size I nearly ended up in A&E!!

I now buy XL size and they are spot on support wise and I can stand up straight without fear of being vasectomised 😉

They have also not shown any signs of loosening either, good quality, just built for people with no nuts!!

Castelli shorts certainly aren't designed for standing up in!! How are they on the bike?

Mine were tighter than I wanted to start with and over a year later are still tighter than I like (I would have sent them back but had to use them). Go one size up minimum but you might need to go up two sizes, the only issue then is whether the leg length will be too long

I had to go 1 size up for Castelli shorts as the straps are a bit restrictive.

Ah, thanks for the replies - thought this had died a lonely death

XXL ordered. XL are pretty bloody snug and straps also quite nippy.
