Just building up my 6 yr olds new bike that came in box today and hit a problem. The cassette and the other end of the wheel hub are noticeably wobbling compared to the fixed axle. Have taken wheel off with a view to removing cassette and re-mounting it but it doesn't have a lock nut like mine.
Anything I can try before I ring shop tomorrow as little lad will be gutted if it's not built when he wakes up?
Probably a screw on freewheel, looks like a Hyperglide tool will fit in, but splines are too deep? Looseness may well be just loose cones anyway, usually adjustable from the other end of the hub(as long as the locknut under the freewheel's not loose). If it is a screw on freewheel and it's loose on the hub, pedalling will tighten it.
Yes it is a screw on freewheel. Have tool kit with right tool but it doesnt quite fit (aldi rubbish!). Cone seems really tight. Looks like a phone call in the morning to get a replacement wheel
For reasons that are probably lost in the mists of time, the tools to remove freehubs and freewheels are different.
They are similar enough to cause a lot of head scratching.
Pop to Halfords and get the right tool for about £6.
A bit of wobble is normal.
If itmworks then leave it.
Thanks for replies. Its definitely wobbling too much. Can't adjust gears to work properly so already emailed supplier asking for a replacement.
