I've changed my SLX cassette to an XT both are 11-36 when I put the XT one on the chain slips in a few gears when I put the SLX one back on it runs smooth.
I even tried it on some other wheels as I assumed it might be the freehub but it did exactly the same again
Can anyone help me please ?
You need a new chain.
You need a new chain too.
Old chain is worn along with the cassette so they work together.
New cassette will need a new chain.
Does sound like a worn chain. The cassette and chain can wear together and carry on working as a pair but once it goes beyond a certain level of wear you can't replace one without the other.
Well they say everyday is a school day and I think I've just been schooled !!
Cheers everyone new chain on order
Why are you changing the cassette? Just put the SLX one back on...with your new chain there is a likelihood it will slip on the chainrings, and then you've have changed the whole drivetrain. Presumably the reason you are changing to an XT cassette is shininess or a bit of weight saving...I would put it in the spares box, and when your whole drivetrain is worn out you can fit it 🙂
Buy a chain checker, they are only a couple of quid. It helps me work out how worn everything is and if it will take a new chain etc.
If I have to change a cassette I always change the chain.
I'd just put the slx back on and run it as long as possible the. Change everything
Yes, you will probably need new chainrings too. As above, I would just run the SLX one until it was knackered and then replace the whole lot.
Worth noting though that, if you get a chain checker you should be able to run about 3 chains through the nice new XT cassette as long as you change the chain as soon as it hits .75 of stretch.
Some argue that you might as well leave the chain till it breaks rather than spend extra on chains and change the whole lot but not sure if it will last as long as 3 chains before it snaps, not sure on that one.
I found that the chainrings are not as sensitive to new chains but you will start getting chainsuck more I guess.
