[Closed] Cassette not running true...

I noticed my indexing had gone to s**t and after much fiddling noticed that the cassette was no longer running true. I can just about get it indexed so all gears will shift but particularly on the larger cogs there is a rubbing as the cassette moves on it's axis.

It's a novatec hub, with a pretty new steel freehub body (replaced after the last one was gouged to death) and brand new cassette torqued correctly and with the correct spacers. There's no play anywhere in the system, and having stripped it;

The freehub and bearings are in perfect condition, looks like new.

The axle appears straight (rolled it on a flat surface)

Wheel bearings are slightly gritty but seem ok?

Does anyone have any idea's what I might have missed? I assumed it would be bent axle but nooope.

PS. I checked the derailleur hanger was true early on in the non indexing journey..

Is it one with a spacer between the back of cassette and shoulder on the freehub? If so, has that been squashed when tightening the lock ring?

I've seen the same thing just this weekend where someone used a plastic spacer. Guess the same can happen with a soft alloy one

It is indeed, and that's a good shout! I'll have a look, think I have a spare somewhere...

Cool. If they go anywhere it is usually where the gap is bigger at the master spline so they get unevenly crushed - hence the wobble.

Ha, wonder if that sorts the op's fault?

I'll have to remember this one too.

I don't have a spare to test unfortunately, however I did have a bottom bracket spacer that was the same size/width and tried with that- it made the issue MUCH worse! Maybe that means you're on the right track. I added photos of the spacer to the folder

It doesn't look bent, but I imagine the tolerances are fairly small. I'll order a replacement and report back.

Thanks for the help so far!

Had the same issue last week and it was the plastic spacer.

Yeah.. Exactly as my cassette did.

Will the old spacer go on flipped over to see if that improves things (different contact patch / points).

Have you got an old loose steel cassette sprocket you could chuck on as a temporary / trial spacer? (might be a bit thick so I wouldn't give the lock ring full torque)

My GX cassette has done this since new.
Didn't see any spacers when I stripped it but maybe missed something?

You can't flip the spacer as it has grooves to make it fit on the freehub a certain way. I've ordered a replacement and will report back 🙂

Does it cause any problems? if not I guess its supposed to be like that. Mine is a shimano system and is defo meant to have a spacer- things are very wobbly without it.

Makes indexing a bit harder. 12spd is already pretty picky and the wobble tips it over the edge sometimes.

I'll take it off again and check. Seems like a fairly common problem but some manage to solve by applying significant amount of grease / lube to force the thing on a bit further.
I'd read spacers were required but XDR (when using a MTB cassette) but shouldn't be for XD.

Wobbly XD cassettes might be caused by the threads on the freehub being crossed....

Threads are fine as far as I can tell, no cross threading evident and was able to hand tighten quite a way before getting the wrench out.

Sounds good... the alternative is a new freehub body which is a pain

Very happy to report back that the 99p part from planet X has fixed the wobble.

I don't post much on this forum, but do a lot of lurking, and have to say it's awesome. No sarcy remarks or unhelpful comments, just straight to the point informed and friendly people.

Thanks very much 😊

I just logged on for first time today to see this at top of the forum!

Thanks for the feedback - always a worry that advice has sent someone on the wrong fix so great to now all is good.

I only tend to post on topics I know about. If everyone did the same, I can't decide if this place would be better or just very dull? 🙂

Just out of interest... Which novatec hub do you have?
Reason I ask is that I have a d462 rear which uses the type f freehub body (needs a spacer like yours) and I did some research which helped. On crc they list a nukeproof neutron v1 freehub body (that fits) that is slightly shorter in length and allows you to do away with the spacer. Just incase it helps anyone in the future.
