My bike bag has a handy pocket on the waist band that my phone fits in.
The next phone I get won't fit.
How do you carry your big phone and still be able to access it?
Commuting - in rear lower back pocket of Gore phantom jacket
MTB - Both my Madison and Aussie grit shorts have pockets suitable to fit (Motorola G8+)
I will only buy a softshell or waterproof if it has a zipped chest pocket big enough for a phone
either rear pocket of jersey, or if I'm not wearing a jersey then I'll no doubt be on the cross/commuter/bikepacker/do-it-all which has my bike-packing frame bag permanently attached.
I have had this problem quite a lot over the years.
First problem was when I was using an old (early 2000s) Camelbak Mule which I still like but the nice phone pocket is way too small. For that, I got a neoprene phone pouch to protect it from dirt and put it in the front pocket. The phone is waterproof, as many are now, so I didn't need to worry about moisture just dirt.
For most MTBing I now use a more modern Camelbak which has a big enough phone pocket at the top. On road, it goes in the jersey pocket.
The only problem then is if I want to ride packless in MTB gear that doesn't have a back pocket, so for that I use a runner's belt, like this:
It's dead good, and I also use it for actual running when I can be bothered.
The next phone I get won’t fit.
Your choice or not?
If its a work phone and you are forced to use a big phone just chuck it in the bag or leave it at home. If it breaks their problem?
In a pocket, shorts hip pocket or jacket pocket.
Jersey rear pocket if road riding or full XC lycra warrior.
I see lots of (generally newbie) runners wearing what looks like a wee black bra type harness, with the phone on the sternum. Looks really shite for running, but may be not bad for biking if there's no other option.
Have you had a look at the 'military' phone pouches and maybe mount on one of the camelback straps. You might need to mod the mounting as it is normally for a web system. They will only work with waterproof phones as not fully protected with a large velcro 'cover'.
I use a Dakine Stealth for phone, keys & wallet.
The Stealth has a nice lined phone pocket, but there is a divider down the middle. Luckily it is a 2 minute job to unpick the stitching to fit a modern phone lying on it's side.
Camelbak - tucked away just in case of an off. Occasionally I'll pop it in my short's pocket, but that's only on a ride where a crash is minimal.
you can get modern small phones. my next will probably be the new iphone mini
Apropros of nothing, the one time I put my phone in my backpack phone pocket, I had a crash that saw me front-flip OTB and land sitting down on the trail - only for the bike to land on my back and head - smashing the phone and bending my MiniMorph pump.
Always used a pocket since and never had any problems.

Same phone here and it fits fine in the thigh pocket of my D2B shorts.
Decent shock proof case and then put it screen side towards thigh in the thigh pocket of shorts. Not had any issues.
the cycling shirts MrsTJ has made me have a front zipped pocket big enough
The thigh outer pocket on many madison shorts sits at 45deg works brilliantly, really can't feel it at all when pedalling.
Admittedly not the biggest phone, but I'm happy to put my iphone 8 in the side pocket of riding shorts/trousers. No movement, cant feel it. IP65 (I think) so no issue on getting wet.
Had an embarassing wash out crash on a corner that cut and bruised my right elbow and knee (xc so no pads), hurt my right wrist slightly.
Phone in right front pocket was fine.
Holster ftw
Jersey pocket on the road bike and for running Salomon XA shorts where the elasticated waist has built-in pockets that hold my iPhone 11 comfortably.
quadlock
I just put in either a jacket pocket, roadie jersey pockets, back pack pocket or shorts pocket. If there’s a risk of it getting wet then either a ziplock bag or a proper Aquapak kind of case.
Or I leave it in the car
Two old Moto g2's and payg = riding phones.
Posh S10e if it goes with me is in bag on my back or drop-bar bar bag.

I got a smaller than average phone, it's great cos' small phones seem to be less fashionable and so cheaper...
Give it a year or two and they'll all be bendy foldy phones again, perfect for riding...
I like the freedom of being away from technology when out in the wild, and when running find the idea of carrying a phone even more annoying that on the bike... BUT obviously, in the event of an accident/problem etc it could literally be a lifesaver. I've been seriously considering getting one of these tiny phones (the sort prisoners smuggle up their bum) with a PAYG sim on a network that will roam to any UK operator. Anyone used one? Anyone know if any of them can send a GPS posn...
Shorts with map pockets. Phone goes in a case in the pocket clipped to the key clip on the shorts.
I'm a little disappointed that no one has said 'You need a handbag' to be honest.
@poly exactly the same here. Don't want to carry a phone but need to be contactable/contact others in case of emergency. In the end I got a small cheap android smartphone with a PAYG SIM and gave the number to a super limited number of people with strict instructions not to call it.
Not sure how comfortable it would be running with a phone up your bum though...
Possibly overkill, but I ride packless most of the time and it's way better than stuff in shorts pockets IMO. Phone, camera, multitool with room to spare.
Evoc or Jack Wolfskin case, both velcro around the shoulder strap of a rucksack. The large Evoc one will just about take a S20 in a case.
Jersey pocket in a velopac, shoved in the Camelback or if those aren't available (and when running) one of these:
Cheap, well made and works really well
