Picking up a 20" Blast for my daughter later and will be having a respray, going on a diet and improving the parts list.

There's been lots of Carrera builds on here so what's the 'go-to' bits to change over?

Bike collected...looking forward to getting on with it.

Starting weight 10.96kg without pedals.

1st on the list is to replace the forks & chainset.

If I was doing something similar the first thing I would do is strip it and weigh the components, and then plan from there.

I'll be doing that with the rest of the bits.

Can get Frog aluminium forks for £30 and Suntour 104BCD chainset for £24 so can put a nice chainring on.

Will be a little pointless as there's won't be anything on there you can't replace with something out of a spares bin that won't be stronger or lighter. It's a built to a (low)  budget kids bike with a decent frame.

What's the Suntour chainset & how long are they? Need to be chopped down?

If you were interested I've got one of the 105/115mm Sq/T cranks off a Pinnacle or Wiggins that I got as spares from Evans. It's not 104 and has plastic side guards but it will stop inquisitive fingers from getting stuck in there.

I was concerned about inquisitive fingers getting stuck in my lads so I bought these -

They've come off the bike and will be/are for sale if you were interested.  Not as bling but very practical.  115mm long iirc

There's a good chance I'll have a spare carbon fork shortly with a 34cmm axle-crown if you're interested.

depends on your budget but vpace do a nice 140mm chainset.

140 is as long as I'd want to go on a 24" wheeled bike.

Spend an absolute age bead blasting the frame and removed 134g's of paint.

Thought I'd post a little update on this build.
It's been a slow process, picking up bits as and when I can but just need a BB, V-brake pads & chain (parts-wise) and get it painted. The frame has been etch-primed, the forks not done yet.
Got a bit anal with the spreadsheet but itemised every part taken off & replacements and have saved over 1.7kg from the original.
Off to the painters in the next week or so:
Carrera

I've done pretty well with the parts I've bought and think it'll be a much better bike that if we'd spent the £200+ on a new one.
Spec:
Carrera Blast 20" frame
Early-Rider 20" disc forks
WheelsON 20" disc wheels (suitable for the rear V-brake too)
Suntour XCT Jr cranks
Shimano XT/Sora 9-speed
Avid FR levers (loads of reach adj.)
Shimano XTR M-951 V-brake
Clarks 160mm Cable Disc brake
Brand-X bars, stem, seatpost
Madison Trail Jr Saddle & grips

Total cost, not including paint, is £140 including buying the bike. Sold most of the old bits to get some money back 🙂
