any good off road when minimally loaded .... - ie low weight but high bulk stuff like clothes - talking reliably off roaded - not just will it cope for a wee bit - talking an epic off road ride !

alternative to using a rack or do they wobble / cause the bike to handle funny/restrict movement around the bike ?

photos would help - i know a couple of you use em - and have seen stoners pomps !

if you use a b17 saddle the loops on the bag are fine.
i use a couple of zip ties too for aded security.

I've used the SQR Trax (which is pretty much the same as the tour) as my every day commuting bag and occasional off-road tour use, so it's probably had about 10,000 miles without probs apart from a small tear to an inside pocket . Nothing bad to say about it apart from the bike can feel a bit unbalanced if it's heavily loaded and you honk out of the saddle, but you soon get used to it.

Edit the only caveat I'd have is if you plan to use it in v. cold conditions say >-20C I couldn't get a definitive answer on how strong the plastic would then be.

i dont really trust those loops for the weight of those bags and the length of rough riding i fancy subjecting it too ...

I've an old one that has been used on easy bridalways while on my road bike, so off road but not MTBing. It does swing a bit especially if it's a large like the long flap if you don't have a rack. So my experience is, yes durable, but the swing a little, fine on road but not for the serious off road, drops e.t.c or sections where you might want to get off the back.

The SQR bracket is very tough and will have no trouble off road. The SQR system can then be attached to any of the saddle bags they produce. The leather straps are more than tough enough to take any abuse you cant throw at them. The SQR system is good for raising the bag up away from the rear wheel too.

I've used one off road quite a lot. It does move around a bit but you really don't notice it. I tend to use a Carradice bag support just for peace of mind, a friend uses a Super C with a QR bracket and it's fine. I can fit just enough stuff in for an overnight bivvy trip or a week of hostels.

The older it gets the better it looks too 😉

I wouldn't want to use the bagman support off road, I've had a couple of them break on me on road with fairly light loads. The bag would be fine, but I'd recommend still sitting it on top of a rack.

Hmm i did think something like that would be the case .

I may still have one for audaxing but i was looking at them as an alternative to a rack and pack for the gdr/tour divide. Really dont want to risk it busting - will end up ruining the trip of a life time

In addition to a SQR or the bag loops, I support mine with a bungee chord - wrapped from a seat rail, round the bag, and back to a seat stay.

My current bag is 15yrs old and still looks new.

I am thinking of the Tour - keen to know why Trax might be betetr (it doesn't look waterproof ?)

trax might be better as it is more 'offroad'and has nice mesh stuff pockets the tour is waterproof, though the side pockets are a bit crap..

perhaps an sqr slim? more clearance and a nice simple one box shape?

thanks for that. I have also thought about the slim (see my other post) as I think I might have a saddle/wheel cleearance issue with the tour (54cm Jake the Snake with cx tyres and only about 75mm of seatpost showing)
the only thing putting me off is the width of it - wondering if I would hit my legs on it ?

The bags by Epic Designs and similar seem to be the GDR racers (and other big self supported stuff) luggage carrier of choice.

sam ive seen them but im loathe to go down that route. would sooner go down jens route of a rack with a dry bag on the back and a dry bag bed roll ! - ive toured like that before with a CC but just not sure about it for 2750 miles

i just liked the look of the carradice stuff having viewed them at audaxes

bought a long flap camper - looks the nuts

spoke to carradice who expressed no concerns at all with me going off road with their bag but wouldnt say owt about the bagman - having got my hands on the bagman i can see why not sold on its longevity off road !

i expect if my plans come to fruition ill be making a frame bracket to hold the underside of the bag as im not keen hanging the weight solely off the saddle

bag looks like the sort of place youd shelter if nuclear bombs started raining down !

Ive got a Carradice barley (only 7L) but had it pretty much stuffed with anything small and heavy when i did some of the West Highland way. Used a Bagman support off my Toupe and a carbon post and it was solid, no issues.

Ive since had a longer support made (scrap stainless rod bent to shape) which allows me to strap a drybag underneath the saddle bag for extra clothes etc. Used that a few times with heavy loads and again not a problem. I have replaced the tiny grub screws of the bagman with sturdier bolts tho, just incase. Also now use a toe strap round the bottom of the support and frame to stop any excessive bounce.

i have a carbon frame , slr 135 and a ritchey 150 quid ultra lite post .... - sounds like an excuse to build a td1 to me !
