Hello everyone

Please bear with me

I currently own a xtracycle free radical mated to an older orange p7 frame that i use for general running about duties, it's excellent as a car replacement for the non urgent stuff locally.

It's only downside is the slight flexy wobble when loaded either with either my daughter who is still far smaller than she'll get or the panniers are loaded up a bit.

have no fear the bike will fail but would prefer some more direct handling especially with my little one on the back.

so now i;m getting to the point.

i'm looking to replace the frameset and free radical only with either a

Yuba Mundo (but can't find the v5 version being sold in UK)
surly big dummy (have concerns over standover and swinging my leg over and clobbering little one in her seat)
xtracycle edge runner ( wanted to use my current build kit and not run 2 different wheels if poss)
xtracycle forget its name but it folds

so basically help, anyone any experience or own one of the above, and anyone encountered the above problem and remedied it?

also any suggested retailers ideally need to be on the cycle to work scheme

cheers

If you hoping to use the C2W scheme then a Kona Ute might be a good bet, hey?

I'm a kona ute owner, mine is flexy when loaded, especially if you're out if the saddle; I think it's inevitable to a certain extent because of the load and length of the bike

Have you discounted the ute? It can be bought on c2w through halfords and a yepp child seat fits on it

Also I have 2 kids on mine (eldest on bench with stoker bars, youngest behind her in a seat bolted to the deck) I've never kicked either when getting on or off 🙂

Talk to shona and rich at keep Pedalling in Manchester about the surly. I think they do cyclescheme?

Really useful bikes or practical cycles are a good place to look

Btw I'm going to sell my Yuba Mundo very soon

T1000 could be interested in the yuba if it's disc compatible?

I have pretty much discounted the kona on the basis I have a lot of xtracycle bits and apart from the yuba they'll work on whatever I pick up next. Also I believe it is a 700c and my stout hope wheels I currently using are 26".

I've used a Yuba with a couple of bass bins and a bike strapped on behind- still felt very stable with little flex-gets my vote!

Hi Lummox, yes it's a disc model I think 4.?

Would be happy to discuss full bike / frame& fork or options in between

I've been running it with shimano disc brakes and a nuvinci 360 hub

Colour is light metallic blue

Moved house with an xtracycle. Twice.

Would buy another in a heartbeat but a Harry vs Larry would definitely be on the cards

I found the same thing with Xtracycle, great for me + stuff, but too flexy for me with live cargo. I took a trip to Practical Cycles to compare Yuba Mondo and Big Dummy and came away with a Yuba frameset (V3 I think). It was great, daughter and her cousin really enjoyed going round town on it. It was completely stable with them at about 14 stone combined. Mind you every hill had me day dreaming about elec assist. As they got bigger we progressed to a Pashley trailer bike for 2, it had 2 wheels so balanced fine, and they're pedaling input made it pretty practical transport, but I think they're only available second hand now. They've moved onto their own bikes now.

If you're only looking to carry one passenger it'd be worth checking out the Circe Helios. It can be configured as a long tail cargo bike that can carry 2 child seats or a tandem that can fit children or adults at the back (and take a child seat if you need).

If you can get to Practical Cycles or Really Useful Bikes it's well worth it to get a proper feel of the different options.

Had two adults on the back of the xtracycle. Big hookworm tyre and big discs let the three of us get away with dropping from the top of Brighton to the beach like that.
