Hello all,

I'm thinking of getting myself a lightweight carbon hard-tail xc rig for some fast fun and just wanted some thoughts/ideas/experiences?

I'm a fairly consistent 86-88kg and enjoy riding mainly xc as well as marathon/endurance events but have my concerns over the longletivity/resilience of carbon.

My prime choices are XTC Advanced or one of Cube's offerings as they seem to get rave reviews/recommendations.

Top end budget would ideally be £2K.

Those on-one carbon hardtails look quite fetching, don't know whether they live up to their fetchingness though!

I'd try and pick up a Whyte 19 C in the sales or build one up from a frame and savvy shopping.

Ive got an old XTC composite, that I have upgraded and love it, not sure how this would compare to the XTC advanced though as these are a step above my old XTC frame, but must have similar characteristics.

I can't complain about my Rocky Mountain Vertex RSL - can be set up as a good trail bike or a race bike and it's comfortable to the point that I've sold the FS bike as it's additional comfort does not outweigh the combination of ride quality and speed that the Vertex offers.

I don't know what size you're after but CRC have some on offer - I wish they were that price when I bought one.

Have a look at the merida FLX range. Brilliant frame quality.

I like the look of the new On One carbon xc frame. 1.2kg claimed frame weight so they should build to around 20lbs with some selective kit 😉

Just to add to the mix, prior to going for the Meta (the better choice for me with hindsight), I did consider the Commencal Skin. It's a sexy XC race bike worth a peek too. I'm more of a clumsy trail rider so didn't want the stress every time I have a ding!

On One have got two blingbling Whippets for £2.2k - they stuck them on the site today, and whilst it's 10% over your budget, they look mighty, mighty fine. Mmmm. Metallic green...

For god's sake someone buy them before I rob a bank. 8)

Thanks y'all,

Plenty of food for thought in there. Must admit though that the Vertex RSL looks like a good package?
