I've kind of lusted after some carbon wheels for a while now, and have been offered a pretty good deal on some DT Swiss XMC 1200's. Still expensive though!
would be on a 130mm 29'er
save a bit of weight - 300 grms, over my current Hope / Arch Mk 3's
any real benefit of alloy rims other than a bit of weight?
Benefit - Ooohhhh shiny. :o)
You can go lighter and still have strength. The last really light alloy rims I had weren't up to the job, for me anyway. The carbon one's I have now are the same weight but much stronger. Light, strong but unfortunately not cheap 🙁
They don't bend like cheese like Hope alloy wheels do 🙂
There's some on the classifieds.... 😉
Edit, cancel that not boost!
I broke 2 Giant rear ones on my Anthem in its first year and then moved over to Hope XC on Pro4. I am a light rider and rarely break rims. Can’t notice any difference in performance or pickup.
Have a front Boost Giant one going a begging 😜
The way I see it is that carbon's proved tougher than anything except from really burly alloy, for me. But anything'll break if you whack it enough and the major difference with carbon and ally then, is that ally rims cost less to replace. Wheels no matter what they're made of are basically longlived consumables as far as I'm concerned so that's how I buy them
OTOH, you just couldn't build an alu wheelset as light as the carbons I have in my Remedy and have them do the job at all.
It's by no means a property in itself of carbon wheels, but those particular DT Swiss ones have a really nice ride quality to them. Stiff and accurate without being harsh, as if they've got a bit of radial give to them. I also haven't killed them yet, despite hitting things a bit too hard with not enough air the tyres.
My LB's are bomb proof although I went for 32 hole all mountain lay up.
Not as light as the xc version but still very light.
My Reynolds Black Label Enduro wheels have been awesome so far. Expensive, but as they came as an upgrade option with the bike it was cheaper than buying them separately. Best bit is the lifetime guarantee against any riding damage. I'm looking forward to getting many years use out of them!
