Carbon steerer, cause for concern or acceptable?

New forks, not overly expensive but I've not got a lot of experience with carbon fibre apart from a basic grasp of its makeup..

There's a depression or void where the crown race will sit and what looks to be a plug slightly higher up.

These are new from the retailer so just wanted an opinion or two before I reach out to them.

The underside of the crown/steerer is blocked off so judging material thickness at that point is difficult but at the stem end it's about 3mm

I'd send them back, thats a pretty appaling surface finish, you then have to ask what the layup beneath is like!

I've seen quite a few carbon steerers - none like that. I'd return them.

That is similar to what some people call the Ring of Death. I wouldn't ride that so you are doing the right thing for your front teeth / frontal lobe.
