Morning all,

My current seatpost needs replacing and so I am in the market for a new, carbon post. As ever, Planet-X seem to offer a range of cheap, shiny things so I wondered if anyone had any experience or opinion of either the PX Black Head or the Selcof MCo3?

Alternatively, please suggest me a cheapish carbon post for a road bike in 31.6m size.

Thanks all.

I have the PX black head on my road bike (31.6) which replaced the cheapo stock alloy post. It definitely isn't as harsh as the alloy post in the alloy frame which was the main aim of changing. I'm more than happy with it and have no complaints.

Have a look at eXotic Carbon. Good stuff, good value.

Thanks all, for £25 I'm inclined to go for a Black Head I think.

How flexy/forgiving is the blackhead?

The only way you'll possibly beat that PX blackhead on VFM is to Buy direct from HK via ebay, aliexpress or similar sites, you'll maybe save a tenner but you won't have a UK based Distributor to deal with and it will take longer to arrive, and there's certainly less of a guarantee when it comes to quality/reliability...

You pays your money etc, etc....

I wouldn't say the black head is flexy at all. It just takes the harshness/buzz away that my alloy post seemed to transmit.

EDIT - to Lunge - it's £40 for the 31.6. The 27.2 is £25.

alanf, well spotted. Either way, still cheap. Anyone had any problems with the 1 bolt set up of the Black Head?

I just took a Flier on the 27.2mm version of This Chinese effort... it really is quite cheap IMO...

It might stab me in the nads, but I'd like to stop at two kids anyway so there's a silver lining whichever way it goes...
The quoted weight of 250g for a 350mm post seemed reassuringly "weighty" TBH I'm half expecting it to be wrapped Aluminium...

We shall see how it turns out, Cheap Carbon Death here I come...

The one bolt set-up is a bit misleading.
There is a turn screw at the front to set the front height which also has a hex head bolt if you have a cut-out in your saddle.
The seat is then clamped by the 'one bolt' at the rear of the post.
The only issue I can see is if you have a really low profile saddle in terms of the rails so you don't have much access to adjust the front turn screw. It should be fine though if you have a saddle cut-out.

I bought one of these Easton EC90s and a USE shim to go on my Storck build. Only disappointing thing is the BZP allen bolts but ordered some Ti replacements. Will also have to bit the bullet and cut the extra length off as I only wanted a 300mm post.

With the Blackhead a super low profile saddle can be a PITA, same as on the Smica posts with the same set-up. They're pretty decent seatposts for the money, just make sure you use carbon paste and fit it with a torque wrench, carbon posts are oh so easy to crush (says he with a knackered carbon use alien).

Thanks sq225917, order now placed. I've got a Flite saddle, some carbon paste and a torque wrench waiting in the garage so hopefully I'll be OK.

You'll be fine.

Those Jobsworth Torque wrenches are in stock at the store, we've been playing 'estimate your torque' with them. Michael the mechanic was within half a Nm each time, the rest of us were way off.
