Hi anyone using a carbon seat post ? I have a 29er hardtail with 2.3 tyres and would like it to be more comfy on rocky/rough tacks on big journeys. I have a decent saddle and tyre pressures at 28psi but would like more comfort, but can you attach bike packing bags to the carbon seat post or is that asking too much

No problem fitting bags. Wrap it in some tape if you are concerned about wear.

If you want comfort then go for as thin a post as possible and shim it if necessary.

Also, Titanium will usually be more comfortable than carbon.

I replaced a stock aluminium post on my road bike with a cheap Brand-X carbon post from Wiggle. It was definitely more comfortable, allowed me to raise the rear tyre pressure 10psi or so with no added discomfort (which was the whole idea, I was pinch flatting too often).

It was possibly too flexy though, just took it off yesterday after a lot of strange creaks and grating noises coming from the seatclamp area, right enough the post had been slipping down whilst also getting all mashed up by the clamp, so it obviously wasn't tight enough, yet too tight!

Buy decent quality, use lots of carbon prep and a torque wrench when installing...

I have a layback Mt Zoom carbon post that seems a lot more comfy than the heavy alloy one Planet X supplied. Add in tubeless 25C tyres and it is noticeably more pleasant. Please note the saddle is not currently set up that far back on the post!

Thanks for the video's Paton interesting but the suspension posts are not going to enable bags to be attached to the seat post, I've being doing a bit of my own research and I reckon I'm going to try wider tyres next my frame is boost and 29" width rims

I wanted a Syntace P6 High Flex but they are ridiculous money - so i bought a Rose flexpost. It's brilliant. Like having 15mm of rear suspension!

only in 31,6 though.

I have a USE carbon seat post on my 29er carbon hardtail and a Miner carbon seat post on my ali gravel bike. Both light, secure and comfy.

Have you looked at the use vybe?ive one on my 29r rigid ss for the last 5 yrs,no its not carbon but takes a hell of alot of the roughness out of most lumps n bumps, set up with correct rbber insert away you go,I still manage a saddle bag attatched too.

Does Paton actually post anything, or are they really just a bot setup to post videos as a response to any question?

suspension posts are not going to enable bags to be attached to the seat post

I'd have thought they'd be Ok, the bag would just deform/slide with it.

Have a look at the Canyon VCLS posts, I've got the older 1-piece one and you can see it doing it's job when looking down even on a road bike with a short seat post.

I've had flexy posts in the past and hated them. They bounce.

I'm now using a 13 year old USE Alien that came off my race bike. Doesn't seem to flex much, and any shock absorption is almost certainly drowned out by 2.3 tyres at 22psi.

I wouldn't worry about bike packing bags. I did have an issue with another one which was use before I had a dropper, and it didn't take that many manual drops when covered in gritty mud to start reducing the diameter slightly. Still worked fine, but the seat clamp needed more tightening.

Op,I cant see it being a problem tbh, personally ive not had anything with much as weight in the pack,I tend to if BPing to distribute it (weight)through the centre and front, with skinny(todays std) 2.3 on I still have a comfy ride, regards to attatchment onto post I have some pretty heavy duty(wildcat gear)velcro wide straps that doesnt need too choke whatever its fixed around(hope that makes sense),ive a 27.2 dia post thT thins down nearer the saddle,I have a medium rubber compound insert although ive put on 6 kgs(87kgs now) since buying I havent seen an awful lot of sag if anything its more comfy than when I was lighter maybe when it was new it was a little harder??
Who knws.
I managed to get mine for £45 in tweeks cycles when I was passing coming back from degla, looking back I remember thinking maybe to buy a few and push them on as they were so cheap,at the time I had never seen them before and thought maybe they cant sell hence them being nearly half price.
Ive carbon on both my Fearless Vulture & Lynskey roadie, both are relatively comfy but they dont smooth out rougher ground aswell as the Use vybe post.
